The story ofZenless Zone Zerorevolves around the Hollows, a calamity that causes disordered dimensions. Hollows appear out of thin air and can containmonsters called Ethereals. The Hollows disaster wiped out the “old civilization,” but New Eridu was reborn from the ashes. Although the Hollows is still a prominent issue and a massive threat, people have areas where they can live peacefully. New Eridu even found a way to monetize the Ethers from the Hollows.
InZZZ, you’re playing as a legendary Proxy called Phaethon. Although eventually you lose your “name” as Phaethon, some people still know your true identity and entrust you with difficult missions inside the Hollows. Proxies are individuals who guide people inside the Hollows, being able to find routes to safe spots, how to get to the desired destination, and how to reach the exit. You and your sibling are especially known for your ability tosync with a Bangboo, which allows you to lead people inside the Hollows personally, instead of remotely like most Proxies.
