After looking back at how the show’s characters relate to one another, Ayo Edebiri explained whyThe Bear’sCarmen “Carmy” Berzatto and Sydney Adamu can’t become a couple. By theend ofThe Bearseason 4, Carmy and Sydney have only been portrayed as friends and co-workers.
Considering that Edebiri has arguably never appeared in a bad project, it seems clear that she understands storytelling. Those same instincts that have led to manygreat Ayo Edebiri movies and showsclearly helped her understand the rich dynamic between Carmy and Syndey inThe Bear’s first four seasons.
Edebiri spoke toVanity Fairabout Sydney and Carmy’s friendship and working relationship. She explained why Sydney and Carmy trying to become a couple could ruinThe Bearand why she has been adamant about this point for several years now.Check out her comments below:
“I feel like we’ve been saying since [season] one, but I don’t know if people are starting to believe us now. I do think that like there’s something about seeing people where they’re really passionate or where they’re excelling at something, it can feel exciting and charged. It’s a hard thing to talk about because we never get it right. I don’t know, my job is to do the thing, and then how you interpret it is how you interpret it. But I do think it’s professional, and I do think if anything were to happen, it would not be the show that we’re making. And I also think it would be so crazy. That man is crazy and that girl is a bad communicator! The restaurant would blow up in like three seconds if anything ever happened.”
What This Means For The Bear
SinceThe Bearfirst became a hit when released in 2022, there has been a sizable group of viewers who have wanted to see one thing. Even though the show has never hinted at the possibility, some fans have wanted Sydney and Carmy to become a couple, and they have become a popular “ship” in the world of television entertainment.
Of course, shows often give in when fans want two characters to fall in love. With that in mind, some fans may think that Carmy and Sydney could still wind up together inThe Bearseason 5or at a later point in the popular series.
However, since Edebiri remains steadfast in her belief that the characters can’t get romantically involved, it seems less likely that Carmy and Sydney will become a couple, regardless of what certain fans want to happen.
Our Take On Ayo Edebiri’s Comments

For several reasons, the idea ofThe Bear’sCarmy and Sydneybecoming a couple feels gross to even contemplate. That said, even though Sydney appears to be married to her job, it still might be nice for the character to have a romantic interest in the future. After all, there hasn’t been a whiff of Sydney having a fling or relationship since she rejected Marcus Brooks.
Of course,The Bearfans have seen Carmy and Claire’s relationship play out and Richie Jerimovich has been flirting with the kitchen expediter Jessica. It feels like time for Sydney to be interested in someone else as well. Perhaps the restaurant could hire some new employees and one of them could catch Sydney’s eye.
