It seems that PlayStation will soon be introducing a new feature that will letPlayStation 5gamers try free trials of games before they buy them. Right now this feature is only available in the UK and has not had any kind of formal announcement by Sony, but one has to imagine that it rolling out toPS5users in other regions is just a matter of time.

This new feature was spotted by Eurogamer, who found that bothDeath Stranding: Director’s CutandSackboy: A Big Adventureare now offering limited-time free trials through the PlayStation Store on PS5.Death Stranding: Director’s Cutis the PS5-exclusive version ofDeath Strandingthat features new content not found in the original release, whereasSackboy: A Big Adventureis a co-op platformerset in theLittleBigPlanetuniverse.

UK gamers who take advantage of these free trials are given six hours to tryDeath Stranding: Director’s Cutand five hours to trySackboy. Eurogamer’s testing has discovered, however, that the free trial timer starts counting down when players start the download, as opposed to when they actually start playing the game. This gives players even less time to try the games, especially if they have a slow Internet connection and can’t download large game files fast. Another restriction is that the trials are only available until October 28, at which point they will be removed.

These restrictions seem odd, and that may be why this feature is only available in the UK for now. Perhaps Sony is testing the PS5 free game trials as a feature it wants to introduce on a larger scale, but is experimenting with how exactly it wants to implement it. It seems like a better way of handling it would be to start the free trial countdown timerafterplayers actually boot up the game, as is the case with most othervideo game free trials, but it’s unclear why Sony went this route.
