One such example lies in itsPokémon Red and BluePokédex entries, which state that it likes to mimic the shadows of people and laugh at their fright. ItsYellowentry says it may try to lay a curse on people, too. However, there is one particular Pokédex entry for Gengar that beats them all and shows just how terrifying this popular Gen 1 Pokémon can actually be.
According to Gengar’s entry inPokémon Sun, if you feel a sudden chill, it’s proof that a Gengar is nearby, something that reminisces back to the Gen 1 entries. The entry is listed onBulbapedia. Additionally, however,Gengar’s Pokédex entry inSunmentions that there is no escaping it and that you should give up. Across Generations, this creature has been built up as a predator that lurks in shadows to claim human lives, but the entry inSun, which states there is no escape from it, shows just how dangerous Gengar can actually be to ordinary people.

The chill that people feel when stalked by a Gengar is said to cool the nearby area by around 10°F, according to its entry inPokémon Diamond, and this chill is said to make victims shake, as seen inCrystal.One of its stalking methods, as seen in Gengar’s entry inPokémon Silver, is to slip into the prey’s shadow and quietly await an opportunity to steal their life.
While Gengar may initially be seen as an ill-intended spirit just for the sake of villainy, that may not be the case. According toPokémon Moon,Sun’s counterpart,Gengar tries to create a new traveling companion for itself because it was once human, but that comes at the cost of the lives of other humans, which is anextremely disturbing Pokédex entry. While some Gengar Pokédex entries, like the one inOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphiremention its shadow near streetlights, other entries, like the one inPokémon Shield, say that it steals the lives of those lost in mountains.
