Square Enix has been in the news quite a bit these past few weeks, with the latest speculation pointing at a fifthThieftitle being developed according to film studio Straight Up Films. The studio claims the game is planned forrelease alongside a feature film, though according to game developer Eidos Montreal, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

After hearing the news, Eidos Montreal head David Anfossi took to Twitter to playfully shoot down the potentialThiefrumors. Along with the title card with the wordsThief 5and a screenshot of protagonist Garret, Anfossi sarcastically wrote that his studio is apparently working on aThief 5game.

Now that they have a title, all they need now is a budget and a team to start working on it.  The words ‘Forget It’ at the end are there to put this rumor to bed once and for all.

While it’s possible that Eidos Montreal could be trying to cover its tracks prior to an upcoming E3 reveal, it’s more likely that nothing is going on at the moment at the studio. Square Enix has a stable full of studios to tap into, so if the speculation of aThief 5is indeed true, it’s entirely possible that a different studio has been put on the case.

With theDeus Exfranchise now on hold and nowIO Interactive on the selling block, Square Enix has recently begun to shift priority and focus on its core franchises and studios. Considering that the lastThiefgame was met with mixed reviews and less than stellar sales, it’d be surprising to see a new entry in the franchise so soon.

Still, many have begun to wonder what Square Enix has planned for its western studios and some of its older IPs likeThief. ObviouslyFinal Fantasyis well covered thanks to the upcomingFinal Fantasy VII Remake, along with anewAvengerstitle in partnership with Marvelthat was announced earlier this year. Outside of that, however, Square Enix has not said much. With E3 less than a month away, it’s likely that fans will finally be getting some answers.

Are you disappointed that it doesn’t look like a new game in the series is currently planned? Sound off in the comments below.
