Square Enix has revealed its cult-classic RPG,The World Ends with You,will be receiving an anime adaptation. The announcement came from a new, official Twitter account dedicated toThe World Ends With You: Animation, accompanied with a link to a countdown timer leading up to a future announcement.

Fans speculated that aThe World Ends With You-related announcement was on the way after Anime Expo unveiled artwork featuringTWEWYcharacters as part of its official program artwork in May. Players have been hoping for a sequel to the original title for over a decade, andseries creator Tetsuya Nomura has stated he is eager to craft a sequel. Despite ports to iOS, Android, and most recently, a remastered release for the Nintendo Switch, the game continues to persist as a cult classic.

Originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2007,TWEWYearned a stellar critical reception and a legion of passionate fans, but it never attained the sales necessary to achieve smash hit status, even thoughit is arguably one of the finest Nintendo DS titles of all time. To its credit, Square Enix never allowed the property to lie completely fallow, and seems to be actively courting a larger audience. In addition to the game’s various ports, series protagonist Neku and his partner Shiki have made cameos inKingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance.

While it isn’t a fresh entry in the series, it is still a good sign for fans, as a popular anime could renew interest and find fans who might otherwise be unaware of Neku and company. This is also, surprisingly, one of the higher profile announcements Square Enix has made lately. The company recently announcedit would forgo trade events in favor of single-game announcements, similar to the recentAvengers' game reveal event.

The World Ends With You: Final Remixis out now for the Nintendo Switch, and more information onThe World Ends With You: Animationwill arrive on Friday, July 3rd at 6 pm PDT.
