What This Means For The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3
The Series Is Continuing Its Much-Needed Tension
In a landscape with readers and viewers yearning for love triangles and love squares, romance narratives thrive on this kind of tension. It may not have seemed like Conrad had been gone for long and that may very well be the point, asthe love triangle between him, Belly, and his younger brother Jeremiah has always been the central forcedriving theintrigue inThe Summer I Turned Pretty. The teaser does what it’s meant to and focuses on the love triangle, mostly showing Belly and Jeremiah before the brooding Conrad is shown in the teaser’s final moments.
Those unfamiliar with the book series are probably only expecting one storm to hit Belly and Jeremiah’s relationship when there are, in fact, two. However, fans of romance seem to always be expecting something bad to happen despite the optics of a relationship, as is the way of the proven formula of romance narratives. Like any other story, there ideally needs to be an all-is-lost moment, or late-second-act breakup, before the final page of a story is reached. The final season ofThe Summer I Turned Prettyaims to deliver this satisfying beat to fans both familiar and new.
Our Take On The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Teaser
A Clichéd But Effective Calm Before The Storm
I won’t explicitly say whether I’m Team Conrad or Jeremiah. They’re two sides of the same scale, with introversion and extroversion at the sides and grief for their mother and their love for Belly connecting them. This dynamic has so far been satisfyingly adapted inPrime Video’sThe Summer I Turned Pretty, with Conrad’s passionate romance being his strength and his emotional unavailability being his seeming crutch. He suffers silently, while Jeremiah’s admirable golden retriever energy is pleasantly loud and accessible, though not without its own suffering.
With Belly facing her own challenges outside of her romance with the Fisher brothers, season 3 should close out her coming-of-age story, dramatically reshaping her. She started off as a character who’s more reactive to the events, especially romance, happening, and byThe Summer I Turned Prettyseason 3, if it adapts the book faithfully,Isabel “Belly” Conklin becomes something more developed, someone who chooses instead of desiring to be chosen. Time will tell if the show follows this or takes its own path.
