PerVariety, theScrubsrevival reboot has officially been given a full series order at ABC, and two original cast members, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke, are set to join fellow original cast member Zach Braff in the new show. News of the straight-to-series order broke today, with the reboot of the quirky hospital comedy aiming for the 2025-26 season.

Original series creator Bill Lawrence emphasized that theScrubsreboot begins and ends with JD and Turk, saying, “‘Scrubs’ means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.” Indeed, the show was never really going to work without at least Faison on board, judging from the new logline which was also just released:

Sarah Chalke’s Elliott Donald Faison’s Turk and Zach Braff’s JD stand in the hospital in Scrubs

“JD (Braff) & Turk (Faison) scrub in together for the first time in a long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.”

What The Casting News Means For The Scrubs Reboot

Expect More Original Stars To Return

It wasn’t set in stone that the original cast members would return for theScrubsreboot, but it was certainly unlikely that it would work if they didn’t. In particular, it’s hard to envision the show with Braff’s J.D. Dorian without Faison’s Turk by his side (or to envision Braff doing it without Faison, period). Sarah Chalke’s Elliot Reed is just as important, with the trio of young residents-turned-veteran doctors anchoring the show.

According to sources, otheroriginalScrubscast members are currently in negotiationsand also expected to return. Chief among them is likely to be John C. McGinley’sDr. Cox, J.D.’s sarcastic and cynical mentorwho turned into something of a father figure for J.D. It’s equally hard to pictureScrubswithout him due to his importance to the show.

The reboot would lose so much of its unique tone without his trademark line delivery. The same goes for Judy Reyes' nurse Carla Espinosa, Ken Jenkins' diabolical Chief of Medicine Dr. Kelso, and Neil Richard Flynn’s Janitor. Hopefully, talks with the other cast members go smoothly and quickly.

Our Take On The Scubs Reboot News

Scrubs Finally Gets To Tell The Story It Wants To Now

With so many long-gestating reboot-revivals these days, it’s well beyond time that Scrubs get in on the action. The beloved series was critically acclaimed, but it lost its way in the last few seasons, thanks to the writers' strike of 2007-2008 forcing a shortened seventh season.

That was meant to be the original ending, but ABC renewed it for two more seasons so it could offer audiences a proper ending. However, with key cast members departing after season 7, season 8 was a letdown, and season 9 felt like an almost entirely different show without the characters audiences had grown to love. What should have been a memorable ending toScrubswas one that just fizzled out.

As such, the series now has the chance to reunite at least most of, if not all of, the main cast, meaningScrubscan finally wash away the bad taste of its last few seasons and tell the story it’s always wanted to, albeit in a different way. While the tone is set to be a bit different, it’s exciting to see what Bill Lawrence and the original gang have in store for old fans and new audiences alike.
