Ever since its reveal at The Game Awards 2018,The Outer Worldsfrom Obsidian Entertainment has generated quite a bit of buzz. Announced just after the general failure ofFallout 76and making it a point to emphasize that the development team includes people that worked on the originalFalloutandNew Vegas,The Outer Worldsappears to be filling a hole left by Bethesda. Since its initial announcement, more details about the game have been revealed, and every new piece of information just makes it sound even more exciting.
The latest details revealed aboutThe Outer Worldspertain to the game’s companion system. Likethe western RPGs that inspired it, players will be able to recruit a variety of companions inThe Outer Worlds, all of which will have their own personalities, desires, and goals. Players can choose to keep these companions with them on their adventures or kick them to the curb, and in some instances, the companions will choose to abandon the player themselves.
This is according toThe Outer Worldsnarrative designer Megan Starks, who initially said in an interview with RPGSite that companions would only leave if dismissed by the player. Starks since took to Twitter to offer some clarification, revealing that there are in fact some things players can do to make companions abandon them in the game.
As for how many companions players can add to their party, Starks didn’t say, though we do know that players will have the opportunity to recruit every companion in the game to their cause. It’s possible that Obsidian has yet to nail down the exact number of companions that will be inThe Outer Worlds, or maybe the team just wants to keep that information close to its chest for now.
Besides detailing the companion system inThe Outer Worlds, Starks also recently discussed microtransactions and loot boxes, and if they will be in the upcoming sci-fi RPG. As some fans will be excited to learn,The Outer Worldswillnot have microtransactions or loot boxesof any kind.
In the meantime, even more information onThe Outer Worldsshould be revealed next year as we near the game’s release date.
