Ayer tweeted in response to a user who spoke about the original trailer for the film. Ayer said that the initial trailer was faithful to his vision. Yet, that concept was radically changed thanks to two key factors. The first, according to Ayer, was the overwhelmingly negative reception toBatman v. Supermanwhich was leaning in on the dark tone. The second, and more prominent factor, was the release ofDeadpool.

Deadpool’s zany comedy made it a box office smash and beloved by audiences and critics. It was considerably the opposite tone ofBatman v. Supermanand Ayer’s own concept forSuicide Squad. Ayer followed up his initial tweet noting the reason for the change by responding to a question. A user posted a side-by-side image of Jared Leto’s Joker from the final film and the original trailer. Ayer explains that the shot was directly changed due from the original being “too dark.”

Ayer ended his tweet session by acknowledging that Warner Brothers studios is “a great place today” noting that this decision was “a moment of the past.” As for theSuicide Squadbrand, a reboot is currently in pre-production underGuardians of the Galaxydirector James Gunn. Gunn himselfis supporting the release of the Ayer cut.

TheJustice LeagueSnyder Cut will be available to stream on HBO Max in 2021.
