WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Squid Game season 3.
Although theSquid Gameseason 3 finale put an end to the massively successful Netflix series, we still have at least ten big questions that have yet to be answered. TheSquid Gameseason 3 finalebrought an end to Gi-hun’s story as he heroically sacrificed himself so that Player 222’s newborn baby would be the youngest winner in Squid Game history.
In the final moments ofSquid Gameseason 3, afterIn-ho gives Gi-hun’s daughter his fortune from her father’s season 1 victory, The Front Man spots anAmerican recruiter (portrayed by Cate Blanchett)playing ddjaki. The series ends on this unsettling note with Gi-hun’s efforts having apparently ended the game in Korea, but not in other parts of the world.
WhileSquid Gameseason 3 wraps up many character arcs, mostly by death in the Squid Game, there remain some unanswered questions about the characters who survived. The future ofthe Squid Game franchise, Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, also hangs in the balance with rumors of anAmericanSquid Gamespinoffin the works.
10Is An American Squid Game Spinoff Happening?
David Fincher Is Rumored To Begin Filming This December
There have been multiple reports that Netflix plans to expandSquid Gameinto a spin-off series set in the United States now that the original show has ended. Legendary directorDavid Fincher (Se7en,The Social Network) is reportedly set to direct, although it is expected to be an entirely new series, not a remake of the Korean original.
Netflix hasn’t revealed whether they’ve givenSquid Game Americaa red light or green light, but Blanchett’s LA cameo is certainly an encouraging sign.
Cate Blanchett’s Los Angeles cameo inSquid Gameseason 3seems like a clear indication that Netflix has plans to expand its most successful TV show everto an American setting. Netflix hasn’t revealed whether they’ve givenSquid Game Americaa red light or green light, but Blanchett’s LA cameo is certainly an encouraging sign.
9Where Will In-ho Go Now?
He May Contact The American Front Man
In-ho fled Korea after destroying the Squid Game headquarters at the end of season 3. He traveled to Los Angeles to give Gi-hun’s daughter his green Player 456 tracksuit as well as 45.6 billion won. It seems likeIn-ho won’t be able to go back to Korea, since an investigation will likely open upon the island where the Squid Game was held.
After In-ho spots the American recruiter in an LA alleyway,he may try to figure out if there’s another Front Man in the United States. There’s also the possibility that In-ho is done with the games and will leave that part of his life behind him after Gi-hun’s death, which may have ultimately changed him for the better.
8Why Was Cate Blanchett’s Character Playing Ddakji In Los Angeles?
The Recruiter Was Not Playing An American Game
Cate Blanchett’s American recruiter was interestingly playingthe same game that the recruiter used to lure players into the Korean game, ddakji. If there truly is an American version of the games, it raises the question of why they wouldn’t be playing a Westernized children’s game instead, especially if the games are held in and around Los Angeles.
For the sake of the story, it makes sense that In-ho spotted the American recruiter playing ddakji, sincethe audience would instantly know who she worked for. If she were playing some other type of American game, her identity and connection to the Squid Game may have been less clear.
7Why Didn’t Gi-hun Finish His “Humans Are…” Sentence?
Gi-hun Let His Final Act Do The Talking
Gi-hun reiterated the point to In-ho and the VIPs moments before his death that he and the other contestantswere not horses, as they were treated as, but human beings. When he tries to define what humans are, he becomes speechless as he sacrificially falls to his death, saving Player 222’s newborn.
Gi-hun was likely overcome by the profundity of the moment he was creating to define humans in such a singular way. He witnessed how vicious and weak humans can be while always being a symbol of strength and purity throughout the games. Gi-hun was conflicted, perhaps confused, about how to categorize all humans, buthis final action spoke infinitely louder than his words.
6Will Jun-ho Take Care Of Jun-hee’s Baby?
The Baby Was Never Given A Name
In-ho leaves Player 222’s child in the hands ofhis brother, Jun-ho, who is one of the best people he knows, next to Gi-hun. As wicked as In-ho has been, he still plays by the Squid Game rules, entrusting Player 222’s child and fortune to the only person left alive he knew he could trust, rather than killing the baby himself.
If Jun-ho decides to raise the child, he would also have to give the baby a name. Odds are thatJun-ho will do the right thing and become her legal guardian, especially considering the enormous money incentive. Still, Jun-ho would be doing it for the right reasons, just like Gi-hun.
5What Will Gi-hun’s Daughter Do With His Fortune?
Gi-hun’s daughter,Ga-yeong, is the second child to also become a multi-billionaire(millionaire in terms of USD) at the end ofSquid Gameseason 3. She lives with her mother, stepdad, and step-siblings, and doesn’t even realize how life-changing In-ho’s gift is to her when she receives the gold credit card. It’s unclear what she and her family will do with the inherited fortune.
4Did No-eul Reunite With Her Daughter In China?
She’s Last Seen At The Airport Before Her Flight
No-eul becomes one of the main characters in theSquid Gameseries finale, who completes her redemption arc by saving Gyeong-seok from the Squid Game. She visits Gyeong-seok and his daughter at an amusement parkwhere she once worked, but keeps the truth hidden about her identity as the pink guard who saved his life.
No-eul is shown at the airport getting ready to fly to China to reunite with her daughter, whom she had abandoned in order to defect from North Korea. The last we see of No-eul is her at the airport moments after Cheol is reunited with his mother, butwe don’t actually see her on the plane or reuniting with her daughter in China.
3Why Didn’t Gyeong-seok Expose The Squid Game?
He Was The Only Non-Winning Surviving Player
Gyeong-seok is the only Squid Game non-winning player to ever escape and live to tell the tale. This raises the question:why isn’t he telling the tale?A big missing component in theSquid Gameseries finale is the lack of public response to the game. Most people in Gyeong-seok’s situationwould have gone to the police and the press. Instead, he returns to his normal life as an amusement park artist.
2How Does In-ho Really Feel About Gi-hun’s Death?
In-ho Was Sorry To See Him Go, But Did It Change Anything?
It’s unclear by the end ofSquid Gamehow In-ho really feels about Gi-hun’s death. After all, he’s a pretty hard person to read. When he bows his head as The Front Man following Gi-hun’s sacrifice, it’sthe first time he ever shows emotion as the man behind the mask. In-ho giving Gi-hun’s belongings to his daughter doesn’t really acknowledge his true feelings, since he’s still doing his duty as Front Man.
In-ho likely won’t be completely broken by Gi-hun’s death, but perhaps it opened up a more humanistic side of him that had been locked away for years.
Based on the admiration that In-ho developed for Gi-hun, there’s no question that, somewhere inside his heart, he is sorry to see Gi-hun go. He knows that Gi-hun is a better person than he is, watching him take the moral high ground every time, even when it costs him his life. In-ho likely won’t be completely broken by Gi-hun’s death, but perhaps it opened up a more humanistic side of him that had been locked away for years.
1Are The Korean Squid Games Over For Good?
Gi-hun’s Efforts Seem Like They Paid Off In Korea
One thing that may be more definitive than others is the fate of the Korean Squid Game. With the island being exposed and destroyed, and the Coast Guard getting involved, it would seem as though it would lead to a larger, national investigation. With season 3 being the finale, it also points tothe notion that Gi-hun’s sacrifice ended the Korean Squid Game.
That said, the Squid Game is still alive and has officially expanded to the United States. If aSquid Game: Americaseries does happen, In-ho could still be the Front Man or hold a high-ranking position. Ending the KoreanSquid Gameseems like putting out a house fire when the whole neighborhood is ablaze, unless In-ho has a change of heart and stops it on an international level.
