Episode Two Of Season 27 Doubles Down On New Depiction Of Trump
Trey Parker & Matt Stone Stepping Firmly On The Gas
Never a show to shy away from controversy, season 27 ofSouth Parkstarted with a bang, skewering the current political climate of the United States, President Trump, and the cancellation ofThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert.Colbert’s show was abruptly cancelled earlier this month, setting off a firestorm of criticism and controversy.
Critics of the cancellation, including Jon Stewart, say it was because of Colbert’s comments regarding the $16 million settlement Paramount made with the President, calling it a “big fat bribe.”Parker and Stone used the season premiere to skewer the network, using Jesus (voiced by Stone) begging the townspeople to get in line or risk being cancelled, too.
The White House issued a statement stating thatSouth Park“hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention,”according toVariety.
Parker and Stone’s largest target, however, was Trump, portrayed in an animation style similar to that of Saddam Hussein in their 1999 filmSouth Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, complete with their trademark Canadian-style flapping head. The creatorsportrayed Trump as a litigious, maniacal dictatorin a romantic relationship with Satan.
Our Take On The Season 27, Episode 2 Trailer Of South Park
Another Wild Ride With The Town Of South Park
South Parkrarely shies away from controversy, butseason 27 takes it to a level it hasn’t been at since their controversial season 14episodes “200” and “201,” which saw the creators threatened by radical terrorist organizations before the episodes were pulled from rotation. The controversy stemmed from their depiction of the prophet Muhammad, something they’d done in season five.
While the physical threat doesn’t exist with this season premiere, cancellation is certainly possible by Paramount. The implication of kowtowing under pressure from the White House after the Stephen Colbert cancellation cannot be ignored, and shouldSouth Parkfind its new agreement in danger, it would make the optics much more complicated.
Parker and Stone’s skewering of Trump is likely to intensify under perceived pressure, andthe duo are likely to dig in harder on their criticisms and their portrayal of him. With Charlie Kirk now appearing to be a target, we’re likely to see a larger backlash from conservative circles, and potentially the Oval Office.
