According to certain retailers, someNintendo Switch 2Edition upgrades will cost twice as much as others, leading to inconsistent pricing. Nintendo previously confirmed thatthe upgrade packs for the twoZeldagameswould be $10, which is what most people probably expected. Until now, many may have expected the prices to be universal. However, that does not appear to be the case, adding another caveat to the already controversial Nintendo Switch 2 game prices.
Best Buy(viaNintendo Life) currently hasSwitch 2 upgrade packs forKirby and the Forgotten RealmsandSuper Mario Party Jamboree listed for$19.99 in the US,which is $10 more thanThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildandTears of the Kingdom. That’s double the price of the upgrade packs for theZeldagamesBreath of the WildandTears of the Kingdom. The Switch 2 Edition of Kirby is listed as $79.99 atBest Buy. Nintendo has not confirmed if the Best Buy pricing will be the standard suggested price.
Kirby And Mario Party Upgrades Apparently Cost $20
That’s A Hefty Price For An Upgrade
The $20 price tag is pretty hefty for an upgraded version of an already-owned game. It remains to be seenhow many Switch 2 upgraded versions will cost $20 instead of $10. The controversial pricing of the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of games is seeing games likeBreath of the Wildbeing priced at $70, andthat game won’t include the previously released DLC for it either. But to see the upgrade packs' prices vary, allegedly depending on how much content was added and how big of an upgrade it is, is likely to cause even more consumer strife.
Notably, in Europe at least, theupgrade packs forRune Factory: Guardians of AzumaandStory of Seasons: Grand Bazaarare listed at£10 / €10, or around $13 USD. So, this appears to be a continuation ofNintendo’s “variable pricing” strategy, as a result of inflation, tariffs, and a general change in its business model.
The Price Makes Sense But Still Hurts
More Content For A Higher Price
If a game is adding more content or more significant upgrades than what has been confirmed forBreath of the WildandTears of the Kingdom, then the$20 price tag does make sense, but even making sense isn’t going to take the sting away. The Switch 2 has had one of the most controversial console reveals and aftermaths in recent memory, and almost all the negative attention has been aim at the high prices, which even led to a"DROP THE PRICE" digital protest during a Nintendo Treehouselivestream shortly after the console’s reveal.
News that some Switch 2 Edition upgrades are going to cost $20 instead of $10 might feel like a gut-punch to some fans. The big question moving forward is: how many of the upgrades will cost $20? TheNintendo Switch 2’s pricing controversy appears to be ongoing for the time being, unfortunately.
