In the eight years since the show’s end, rumors have never truly stopped circulating aboutSherlockseason 5. For those who watched the series when it originally aired, every season ofSherlockis etched into their minds because of the incredible internet presence it had (and still does).

Newer fans, however, typically wish they’d been around for the peak of the show when it happened. While there are many TV shows viewers would love to make a comeback,Sherlockis definitely one of the most in demand.

However, despite some recently kicked-up rumors,Sherlock’s co-creator and Mycroft Holmes actor Mark Gatiss has apparently provided a definitive response that season 5 won’t be happening(viaCollider). Ultimately, Gatiss felt that the legacy of the show stood for itself, and that his age also played a factor in his decision. See his full comment below:

No. We had our go, and we struck gold with Benedict and Martin. I mean, there’s no…what would be the point? You’d just be doing it again. And to be frank, you know, I’m 60 next year. It’s incredible… It’s great to tip your hat to what a wonderful thing it was, but also it’s lovely to move forward.

What This Means For The Future Of Sherlock

Mark Gatiss Has Seemingly Shut Down Any Hopes Of Sherlock Season 5

While it’s impossible to say whetherSherlockseason 5will ever happen, especially whenGatiss can’t predict whether his and co-creator Steven Moffat’s feelings on the matter could change,it appears very unlikely. What Gatiss’ comments confirm, however, is that it definitely won’t happen anytime in the near future.

Still,it’s not just about Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. While they are the writers and creators of the show, and without them, there would be nothing to film, it also comes down to Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

It’s hard to say definitively, but it’s possible that if the iconic pair who portrayed Holmes and Watson voiced their desire to come back, Moffat and Gatiss would consider writing something for them. However, until that happens, audiences will have to acceptSherlock’s fate.

Our Take On Mark Gatiss' Comments

Gatiss' Remarks About Sherlock Season 5 Are Fair, But Disappointing

Considering how long it has been sinceSherlock’s series finalein 2017,it’s great how many viewers are still keen to see a revival. While Gatiss’ comments are more than a little disappointing, as he shuts down any possibility with such determination, they also make sense.

Sherlockhas been off the air for a long time now,and although it’s remembered fondly, it’s worth noting that a lot of popular TV shows ended up flopping when they finally returned to screens after years of audiences’ begging. Even though there’s nothing to suggest this would happen withSherlock, it isn’t impossible, either.

FromSherlock’s Reichenbach Fall mysteryto the titular character and John simply having tea with Mrs. Hudson, there are loads of iconic moments throughout the show. However, we may have seen everything there is to see from these two characters; at least, that’s what Gatiss appears to imply.

It seems apparent thatMoffat and Gatiss appreciate the loveSherlockis still receivingtoday, but that doesn’t mean the two writers have to appease audiences. If they don’t have anotherSherlockstory, or just don’t want to tell it anymore, then they are well within their right to say no.
