Mark and Helly’s fate might have seemed uncertain afterSeveranceseason 2’s ending, but one detail from the season’s finale seemingly gave away how the two characters could survive in season 3. BeforeSeveranceseason 2’s final credits start rolling, Mark’s innie makes the bold decision to defy his outie by pursuing his love for Helly. He saves Gemma by escorting her out of the Lumon building. However, instead of joining her and letting his outie live happily ever after, he chooses to stay behind in Lumon to be able to be with Helly.
While the innie’s decision to stay back makes a lot of sense, it comes with a lot of risks. Helly and Mark seemingly have nowhere to go afterSeveranceseason 2’s ending. If they leave the Lumon building to escape from the company’s authorities, they will end up transitioning into their innies. Similarly, if they stay inside, they will eventually get caught and punished for putting the company’s reputation in jeopardy. They seem trapped afterSeveranceseason 2’s finale, but one scene seems to suggest they might still be able to save themselves.
Jame Eagan’s Advice To Helly In Severance Season 2’s Finale Script Explained
He Hints That He Expects Her To Become His Successor
Thescript forSeveranceseason 2’s finalehas been released, which offers some deeper insights into several scenes from the “Cold Harbor” episode. For obvious reasons, the script also includes the brief interaction between Helly and Jame Eagan, hinting at what Jame wants from his daughter’s innie. After watchingSeveranceseason 2’s finale, many viewers could not help but speculate thatJame Eagan eventually plans to replace Helly with Helena because his daughter’s outie has lost her spark to effectively lead the organization.
Before parting ways with Helly, he also asks her to “stay on the path,” making it evident that he hopes to make her his heir instead of letting Helena take over as Lumon’s next leading figure.
He not only sees that spark in the innie but also finds a reflection of Kier Eagan in her. In the script, Jame Eagan explicitly states:“I am—feeble. When I go to the table impalpable—the weight of his earthly purpose shall pass to my progeny.“Before parting ways with Helly, he also asks her to “stay on the path,” making it evident that he hopes to make her his heir instead of letting Helena take over as Lumon’s next leading figure.
Jame Eagan’s statements in the script seem to highlight that he understands he will not be around for long to lead Lumon. To his dismay, he also cannot see Helena taking his place. Helly, in contrast, has shown him immense potential, which seemingly prompts him to approach her and hint at his future plans. Although it is hard to imagine Helly complying with Jame Eagan, she might eventually agree to become his heir if the deal benefits her in one way.

Considering all the potential damage Helly and Mark have caused to Lumon’s reputation with their season 2 plan, the company would likely be apprehensive about keeping them and the other innies alive. The company would want to fire all the employees who were even distantly involved with Gemma’s escape from the Lumon building. However,Helly might be able to save everyone by agreeing to replace Helena as Lumon’s future leader.
Jame Eagan might sweeten the deal for her by agreeing to keep Mark alive. Helly could also convince him to spare all the other innies, which would allow her and Mark’s innie to pursue their romantic relationship without worrying about the threat of being terminated. However, Helly’s decision may not sit too well with Mark’s innie in the long run, given how he has clearly seen what Lumon does to people in the name of experimentation and science. This could lead to complications between Helly and Mark and may eventually convince Mark to leave Lumon inSeveranceseason 3.
