It’s been announced during Inside Xbox at Gamescom thatPlayerUnknown’s Battlegroundswill soon have cross-play for PS4 and Xbox One owners.Cross-playtesting will begin in September, with the feature becoming available for everyone in early October.

While Sony was originally staunchly against cross-play with other systems, it has finally given in and started to welcome cross-play between the PS4 and other consoles, starting withFortnite.PUBGis the latest multiplayer title to take advantage of this new stance.

Cross-play between the PS4 and Xbox One will go live on thePUBGPublic Test Server in late September. The exact date is not yet available, but after testing for a week or two, cross-play will be available for all players in early October. It’s not yet confirmed if the PS4 and Xbox One cross-play will also extend to PC.

Along with the news for cross-play, PUBG Corporation also revealed new information on Season 4, which will be out August 27. The new season will take place on the originalPUBGmap Erangel,but with a graphical update. There will also be cooperative rewards, which the wholePUBGcommunity will work together to achieve and unlock special rewards. Finally, Survivor Pass 4: Aftermath will be available for purchase for 1,000 Coins in-game or $14.99.

With biggest competitorFortniteoffering cross-playbetween all consoles and PC, it’s no surprise thatPUBGis following suit. Cross-play allows more gamers to play with one another, greatly increasing the player pool for the queue. Cross-play is overall a very consumer-friendly practice, and while it’s not always easy to implement, it’s generally a worthwhile endeavor.

WhilePUBGwas the first battle royale title to gain traction,Fortniteis still the genre leader. PUBG needs to matchFortniteregarding several of its features, including cross-play, in order to stay relevant. WithPUBG’smobile versiongetting banned in multiple countries, good publicity is more important than ever for the game and company.
