According to the description of the unfilled position at Niantic, those that apply will be expected to “build intuitive and beautiful web applications that let millions of users view and submit data on the world’s most interesting locations.” Of course, while the developer has multiple games that make use of real world locations, the explanation of the new full stack web engineer’s duties at least alludes to Niantic working on a system related to player-submitted PokeStops and Gyms inPokemon GO, but stops just short of confirming it.
As of now,Pokemon GOfans are not technically able to submit locations to Niantic for potential inclusion in the ARG, as the developer actually relies on players of its gameIngressto submit new spots. Those that hit a particular level inIngresscan participate in"Open Portal Submission"windows, with Niantic then determining whether or not the submissions should go on to be added to bothIngressandPoGO.
Taking all of this into account, the prospect ofPokemon GOfans possibly being able to submit suggestions for PokeStops and Gyms is definitely an exciting one, especially when one considers the vast amount of players in rural areas who are constantly craving more to do in the game. Hopefully, Niantic will not only be able to find a way to allowPokemon GOfans to submit locations, but also do so in a manner that won’t affect the game’s overall stability.
