For months now, Blizzard has been criticized by the general public as well as its own employees as it finds itself in the center of multiple lawsuits. Developed by Blizzard,Overwatchhas been a title that was under pressure to make several fixes after it was revealed that McCree, anOverwatchhero, was named after Jesse McCree, an ex-employee who was part of the controversial Blizzard “Cosby Suite” group.
Just yesterday,Overwatchrevealed McCree’s new name change, which came with some mixed reception from fans. While some felt as though this was a step in the right direction, others claim this isn’t nearly enough. After changing McCree’s name to Cole Cassidy,Overwatchalso offered fans a chance to change their BattleTag name for free.

In a tweet,Overwatchattached a link that users can follow in order to change their BattleTag names. The free BattleTag name changethatOverwatchis offeringis only for a limited time, however, and will run from October 22nd to November 5th, 2021. It is also only available to users that don’t already have a free BattleTag name change available to use on their account as each user is granted one freebie from the get-go. After use, the price to change the BattleTag returns to $10 for subsequent changes.
Some users that have previously used their freebie are experiencing issues attempting to use the new free BattleTag change. These users that have previously used their original free BattleTag name change will have to submit a support ticket in order to change their name free again. Additionally, free BattleTag name changes don’t stack for those that currently have a free name change.
The free BattleTag name change is a small gesture, but one welcomed by fans who’ve been wanting to change their names without having to pay the $10 fee.
Activision Blizzard recently fired more than 20 employeesin response to the lawsuits, but it remains to be seen if its efforts will be enough to restore the public’s confidence. AlthoughOverwatchis starting to make small changes to win the audience back, it may need to do more.
Overwatchis available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
