One original star confirms they will not be returning forDexter: Resurrection. The latest sequel in theDexterfranchise,Dexter: Resurrection’s storyfollows Michael C. Hall as his character returns from the dead to follow his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), to New York City.

So far,Dexter: Resurrectionhas been a success.ScreenRant’s Greg MacArthur said in hisDexter: Resurrectionreviewthat the series delivers “exactly what the franchise needed and what fans have been dying to see.” The series feels like a return to form with Dexter on the hunt in a metropolitan area, while also expanding on his character and the lore.

Rita Morgan lies in a coffin in Dexter

After the originalDexterhad a poorly received series finale, and the finale to the single-season sequelDexter: New Bloodproved divisive,Resurrectionhas the chance to tell new, engaging stories. Some of that is delivering fan-service moments, but one actor won’t make an appearance.

Julie Benz Won’t Reprise Her Role As Rita

Other Dexter Actors Have Returned

Resurrectionmade it clear that it wants to have ties to what came before. SeveralDexteractors have already returned inResurrection, and there still may be more surprises to come. Some of these have included Angel Batista (David Zayas), Harry Morgan (James Remar), James Doakes (Erik King), and the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow).

In an interview withBingetownTV Podcast Network,Rita Morgan actor Julie Benz confirms that she will not reprise her role. She describes being “a little heartbroken” and believes there was some missed opportunity with the storytelling. Benz says that theResurrectionteam never reached out about her returning as Rita. Check out her quote below:

I knew they were using a clip. I do think there’s some missed storytelling there that could be intriguing, but, they’ve never reached out or never made that a plan. So, am I a little heartbroken about it? Sure. But, again, it’s not my show, so, you know, as an actor, I just tell everybody that I just don’t have the best of luck with reboots, I guess. It’s not in my karma or whatever, I don’t know. They don’t feel that it’s important enough [to bring Rita back], which is sad. I think that there is some storytelling that could be there.

Our Take On Rita Not Returning

It’s A Missed Opportunity

Although Rita was tragically murdered by the Trinity Killer, mortality has not stopped other dead characters from returning inResurrection. When Dexter is recuperating in the hospital from his near-fatal gunshot wound, he has visions of people from his past, putting his past failures on display.

Benz returning as Rita would have been a treat for the fans, but also a painful reminder to Dexter about his past.

Dexter never had a greater failure than what happened with Rita. When he had the Trinity Killer strapped down, Dexter was unaware that Rita had already been killed in their home. This marked a huge change in the series, as Rita had played a massive role.

Not having Benz reprise her role is a missed opportunity, especially consideringDexter: Resurrectiondoes show Rita dead in the tub, although it’s far in the background. Benz returning as Rita would have been a treat for the fans, but also a painful reminder to Dexter about his past.
