One Piecemore than delivered on one of its saddest moments with episode #1132, and it left plenty to be excited about for episode #1133 and beyond. Kuma’s tragic backstory has reached a major turning point, and depending on how things are handled from here, it can go down as being just as iconic in the anime as it was in the manga, if not more so.

One Pieceepisode #1132 picked up two years after Ginny’s abduction, with Kuma’s grief-induced rampage across war-torn nations coming to a halt when the Revolutionary Army suddenly receives a call from Ginny. It was hardly a moment of celebration, however, asGinny called her friends just to talk to them one more time before she died, with not even Kuma being able to do anything to save her. Ginny’s death opened up a brand-new world for Kuma, however, and seeing it play out will be great for episodes #1133 and beyond.

One Piece Episode 1131 Review: A Great, But Uneven Episode

One Piece Episode 1131 In Review

As it stands,One Pieceepisode #1131 is probably the weakest episode of Kuma’s flashback arc and the weakest episode in a while when it comes to visuals. While it didn’t look bad and had plenty of good-looking scenes, most notably when Kuma took on the pain of the elderly, those scenes were far and in between, and overall,One Pieceepisode #1131 is brought down heavily by its largely lackluster visuals. That sort of criticism is unfortunately common for episode director Katsumi Tokoro, but hopefully, things will pick up in the weeks to follow.

Fortunately, episode #1131’s story content more than made up for any visual shortcomings. Kuma’s backstory has succeeded for how tragic it’s made his life out to be and how much he keeps trying to do good despite it all, and with everything that happened on Sorbet and the big cliffhanger with Ginny,One Pieceepisode #1131 succeeds for how well it continues the tragedy that is Kuma’s life. It was another beautifully sad episode ofOne Piece, and sure enough, episode #1132 took that even further.

What Happened In One Piece Episode 1132?

Produced By Toei Animation; Directed By Sho Inuzuka

One Pieceepisode #1132, “A Pledge to Ginny - Kuma Becomes a Father”, picked up two years after Ginny was captured and made a slave of the Celestial Dragons. Kuma, stricken with grief, has devoted all of his time tothe Revolutionary Army, rushing into battles around the world without ever taking a break or paying any mind to the damage he was taking. One day, however, the Revolutionary Army received a call from Ginny, saying she was freed from her slavery, but unfortunately,Ginny called her friends just to tell them she was going to die.

Kuma refused to let Ginny die, so he teleported to the one place he figured she would be: the church they lived in on Sorbet. Kuma’s intuition was correct, but unfortunately, Ginny was already dead by the time he got there, her body plagued with a mysterious illness called Sapphire Scales that turned her body to stone when exposed to light. Kuma was overtaken with sadness like never before, but at that moment,Kuma discovered that Ginny had left behind a baby girl, and so Kuma swallowed his grief and promised to take care of the girl in Ginny’s place.

Kuma in the church

Five years go by asKuma raises Ginny’s daughter, Bonney, as if she were his own, and the two couldn’t have been happier. Everything changed, however, when Bonney developed the same illness as Ginny, and a doctor said thatthere was no cure for Sapphire Scales and Bonney had only five years to live, at most. Bonney, who overheard part of the conversation, misunderstood things as her being cured by the time she was 10, and as Kuma spent a year struggling with what to do, King Bekori returned with plans to kill everyone in southern Sorbet.

One Piece Finally Confirms The Biggest Bonney Theory

Bonney’s True Age Is No Longer Up For Debate

Ever since the Egghead arc opened with the Straw Hats finding Bonney as a child, there’s been heavy debate about whether her true age is that of a child or the young adult she’s typically depicted as being. Over a year later, though, episode #1132 finally puts the debate to bed, asOne Pieceepisode #1132 finally confirms that Bonney is only twelve years old; that knowledge does make some of the fanservice scenes with Bonney especially uncomfortable in hindsight, but hopefully, this reveal will mark the end of their prominence in the story.

One Piece Perfectly Delivers On Its Most Tragic Moment Yet

What Made One Piece Episode 1132 So Good

After a largely middling episode with episode #1131,One Piecemore than delivered with episode #1132. The animation, music, and overall direction all did wonders to convey not only the sadness of Ginny’s death, but also the joy of Kuma’s new life with Bonney, followed by the newfound dread as he realizes even that might be lost to him.One Pieceepisode #1132 managed to deliver on every emotional moment with nothing but the utmost craft, much of which can be attributed to episode director Sho Inuzuka, and overall, it was great to watch.

The biggest standout of episode #1132, however, was undoubtedly Kuma’s voice actor, Hideyuki Hori. For over 20 years now, Hori has mostly only had to deliver lines from Kuma’s stoic personality, so episode #1132 was the first time he got to portray Kuma with more range, and sure enough,Hideyuki Hori did a phenomenal job of selling the wide range of emotions that truly define Kuma’s character. The rest ofKuma’s backstorywill only give Hori more time to shine inOne Piece, and if episode #1132 is anything to go on, that’s something everyone should look forward to.
