It has been just 64 days since theNintendo Switch 2hit store shelves, and by all accounts, the console has been a smashing success, and it has officially shattered yet another record. The Switch 2 has been widely reported as the fastest-selling console of all time, and it recently broke a previous 12-year salesrecord held by the PlayStation 4. Now, we have a better idea of exactly how well the console is performing.
Nintendoreleased its latest financial report on August 1, detailing that the Switch 2 sold more than six million units in seven weeks. Gaming consultantJordan Curtisanalyzed and broke down the Switch 2’s first two months' performance in a post on LinkedIn and determined that the Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units in its first four days, becoming the best-performing Nintendo consolewithin that period.
And It Continues To Dominate Sales Charts
Within the first 26 days of launch, theNintendo Switch 2 sold about 5.82 million units. That number has continued to climb. Nintendo previously stated that it believed theSwitch 2 would sell 15 million unitsand 45 million games by the end of its first fiscal year, which will be March 2026. The console also released outside the holiday season, and will spend three fewer months on the market for its first fiscal year than the Switch 1 did.
Nintendo has reportedly been attempting to expand"the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP…to continually invigorate our dedicated video game platform business,“according to Curtis, who paraphrased part of Nintendo’s report. The success is also attributed to launching a follow-up console in an environment in which there were 128 million annual Switch 1 users already present.
Switch 2 Software Sales Are Great
Despite Releasing With Few First-Party Titles
Early software sales have also been reported by Nintendo and, unsurprisingly,Mario Kart Worldis the dominating game on the Switch 2, having moved around 5.63 million units, as of June 30, which means that an estimated 96.7 percent of Switch 2 owners also bought the game. A total of 8.67 million Switch 2 games had been sold, also as of June 30, and that number is likely quite a bit higher now.
TheMario Kart Worldbundle, and its high$80 price tagif it was purchased independently, waslikely the biggest contributor to that high number. Thebest-selling third-party gameisCyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, while many other third-party games have struggled to find their footing on the platform.
The Nintendo Switch 2 controversies, likeGame-Key Cards, its higher-than-expected price tag, the cost of games, and more seem not to have had much of a negative impact on the console’s performance. With Nintendo greatly expanding theNintendo Switch 2library later this year withPokémon Legends: Z-A,Metroid Prime 4, and a lot more, it’s safe to say the console’s future is looking bright.
