Months after its release,Nier: Automatais continuing to surpass sales expectations. Through its officialTwitteraccount, it was announced thatNier: Automatahas sold 1.5 million combined units.

The figure combines the numbers of physical units shipped with digital copies sold. It’s worth mentioning that this is up from 1 million combined copies sold in April, with more than500,000 of those salescoming from Japan and Asia alone. The title is available for both the PC and PS4, but these numbers were not broken down by platform.

While reporting sales figures isn’t uncommon,Nier: Automatagarnered special attention when this unassuming sequel turned out to be a sleeper hit. When it was released, it had a couple things working against it. Although it was a AAA title, JRPGs often struggle to gain ground in the western market. This combined with a release date pinned between the releases ofHorizon: Zero DawnandBreath of the Wild, and it’s not difficult to see why many were surprised when itsurpassed sales expectationsin its first month.

Its success is due in no small part to the quality of the game itself.Nier: Automatahas received almost unanimous acclaim, with most outlets giving the game very high marks. We also sang its praises, but were more generous in our review, giving the titlea perfect score.

As the word continues to get out aboutNier: Automata, those sales figures will likely increase; and this title deserves all the attention it gets. Those who haven’t given the game a shot should check out its demo or just take the plunge. Aside from the excellent main game, there is also a ridiculously named DLC that allows players to challenge Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda. Who could ask for anything more?
