Jojo’s Bizarre Adventurefans are always eager for the next big release, but a new figure of Joseph Joestar has caught the ire of some fans, who feel the figure isn’t living up to its potential. Included among these fans is, surprisingly, the creator ofDevil May Cryhimself, Hideki Kamiya.
Anime figures and statuettes are an extremely common type of merchandise, generally depicting a character in an iconic outfit and/or pose. The figure in question depictsJoseph Joestar in his part 2,Battle Tendency, costume and appearance, but is meant to be poseable, and comes with interchangeable hands and faces. The complaints that Kamiya and other fans have about the statue largely center on its facial sculpt, as Kamiya decried the statue as looking like it came from a “fan-made doujin,” rather than matching up to the actual art style used in the series.

The Figure Doesn’t Look Like Hirohiko Araki’s Original Artwork
Hideki Kamiya had many thoughts on the new figures,which he posted to X (Formerly Twitter). The figure seems to use series creator Hirohiko Araki’s more recent art style as a basis, making Joseph look rather unlike how he actually appeared inBattle Tendency. The face in particular looks quite young compared to how Joseph is typically portrayed, reminding Kamiya of another incident he had in theJojofandom, wherein he saw a double-spread in an artbook that looked quite different from the traditional way of depicting the characters, which led him to fall to his knees in despair.
Kamiya may be a bit dramatic here about theJojofigure, but he makes it clear that he’s been a fan of the series for decades now and is quite dedicated. Other fans echoed Kamiya’s sentiments, stating that the figure’s design was a “weird choice” and noting that it didn’t look much like the anime version or the manga version of Joseph. Many seem to be in agreement that the figure is designed after Araki’s newer art style rather than his classic style, making it look quite different from the Joseph that long-time fans remember.

While the Joseph figure in question did receive some positive attention from fans as well, some of whom noted that its design may be intended to emphasize action poses from the manga, explaining why it looks a bit odd in three dimensions, there was a general sense of disappointment that echoed Kamiya’s sentiment. Both Kamiya and other fans called out a recently released “Super Action Statue” of aJojocharacter as an example of what they’d prefer their figures to look like.
Collecting anime figures and statues can certainly be a hotly debated hobby, especially when it comes to the overall quality of a figure. With some statues costing hundreds of dollars, it’s easy to understand why fans would be exceptionally picky over the quality. Hopefully, Hideki Kamiya can find himself aJojo’s Bizarre Adventurefigure that meets his standards.
