High rankings are to be expected from an established series with an avid fanbase likeDandadan,which is already in its second season, butTougen Anki: Legend of the Cursed Bloodis a breakout hit that came out of nowhere. Although the manga, written by Yura Urushibara, began in June 2020, it was not translated into English until September 2024.
In May 2024, the anime was announced, only months before its debut.Tougen Anki’srelative newness has not hindered it in the slightest though, and its episodes regularly receive millions of views on Netflix. The series has been compared tonew-generation anime hitslikeJujutsu KaisenandDemon Slayer,because of its similar plot and power system.
Tougen Anki’smain conflict revolves around the tension between two rival clans: the Oni and the Momotaro. Shiki Ichinose, the series' main character, has demon, or Oni, blood, but his adoptive father, Tsuyoshi Ichinose, was once a Momotaro. When his father betrayed the Momotaro clan to help his son, he was killed, and now Shiki is out for revenge.
