Then came the release ofThe Fantastic Four: First Stepstwo weeks later on July 25. That Marvel movie nearly matchedSuperman’s opening, making $117.6 million. Now, it has amassed $367.4 million worldwide, but its total is still growing. Both films also received strong reviews from both critics and audiences.
The prominence of these movies in theaters has led to increased interest in similar titles at home. Many people have been watching previousFantastic Fourmovies, for example, preceding the MCU’s reboot.The Incredibles, a Pixar film often compared toFantastic Four, is also trending on Disney+. Now, a movie more comparable toSupermanis doing well on streaming.
Megamind Is Trending On Streaming
Megamind,as of late, has been gaining traction on streaming. UnlikeThe Incredibles, which is similar toFantastic Fouron a broader level,Megamindis a more direct spoof ofSuperman.Like Clark Kent, its blue alien protagonist is sent to Earth from another planet by his parents. Except in his case, Megamind becomes an evil genius.
Megamindhas a superstar voice cast, including Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, David Cross, and Ben Stiller. The movie garnered decent reviews, with a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes.Megamindalsomade $321.8 million on an estimated $130 million budget.
15 years after its debut in 2010,Megamindis currently seeing success on streaming.The DreamWorks project is the No. 10 movie on Netflix in the United Statestoday (Aug. 5). It’s also the No. 7 film among kids' movies.
Our Take On Megamind’s Streaming Status
Megamindhad the unfortunate release curse of debuting the same year asDespicable Me. With both films starring “bad guys” as their protagonists, they had similar premises, butMegamindwas completely eclipsed by Gru and the Minions.This lessened its impact when it came out in theaters, and the movie was largely forgotten over time.
Nonetheless, I am glad that the release ofSupermanseems to be cuing some people to watchMegamind. While it is not on the same level asShrekorHow to Train Your Dragon,Megamindis one of DreamWorks' better films. As such, thisSuperman-infused era is a better time than ever to finally check out the film after over a decade.
