It appears like there is still more to reveal forMario Kart World, despite the game and the Nintendo Switch 2 releasing next week, as fans think they may have spotted a brand-new, currently unannounced game mode. Since the 15-minuteMario Kart WorldDirectin April, Nintendo has released some gameplay clips of the game, most of them focused on the missions in the game’s Free Roam mode. In addition to Free Roam and Knockout Tour, there may be another new mode, and looks similar to a classicMario Kartgame mode.
What Is Mario Kart’s Mirror Mode?
A Challenging, High-Speed Race
Mirror Mode debuted inMario Kart 64and has appeared in every game sinceDouble Dash!!The mode is usually an extra unlock that flips the game world on its Y-axis and usually runs at least 150cc. InMario Kart 8: Deluxe, Mirror Mode was unlocked from the start. In Mirror Mode, everything becomes the opposite—left turns become right turns and vice versa, but the track direction remains the same.
In this new footage ofMario Kart World, though, the world is not mirrored; drivers are just going in the reverse direction. The game is set to introduce several new modes to the franchise, and is also the firstopen-worldMario Kartgame, so the addition of a “Reverse Mode,” (or whatever it ends up being called, if it’s an official mode) would not be surprising. WithKnockout Tour being one long raceacross multiple tracks and areas between them, this footage could be a part of that. A “Reverse Mode,” or a Mirror Mode, has not been confirmed yet.
Would Mario Kart Be Mario Kart Without Mirror Mode?
It’s A Series Staple, But World Is Adding A Lot of New Things
Mirror Mode has always addeda lot of extra playability to theMario Kartseries. It essentially gives players two different versions of almost every track in the game. There has been no mention of a Mirror Mode from Nintendo yet, but this new footage seems to be an entirely different mode of play. It could be a simplified version of Mirror Mode to work with the game’s open world, but it could also be yet another new mode added to the game, which may help justify the$80 price tagfor some fans.
Either way, we won’t have long to wait, asMario Kart Worldand the Nintendo Switch 2 launch together next week on June 5. Even this close to launch, it seems likeMario Kart Worldhas quite a few secrets to be discovered.
