The success of Netflix’s latest number-one movie,KPop Demon Hunters, serves as a testament to audiences' appreciation of goodmusicand great animation. The movie’s fictionalK-Popgroups will likely be the jumping off point for manybeginner K-Pop fans, whether they’re looking for apowerful girl groupor a charming boy group.
Either way, the first K-Pop group that viewers will come across, if they keep the credits rolling, is TWICE. Their song “Strategy” was featured in the movie’s soundtrack, but three members also recorded their own version of HUNTR/X’s “TAKEDOWN.” The song’s recording sessions are shown just after the first set of credits.
When it comes to getting into one of the most overwhelming genres of music,TWICE is a fantastic place to start. The nine-member girl group celebrates their 10th anniversary in October. Since 2015, they’ve been a staple in the industry, proving to fans that they’re nowhere near done with what they set out to do.
Below is an initial ranking of their latest album,THIS IS FOR, including five unique unit tracks and fully-English tracks.
14PEACH GELATO
Track 6 - 2:18
On an album filled with catchy tracks, “PEACH GELATO” is the perfect background music for your next summer fling. The heat might make any sweet treat melt as soon as you leave the shop, but this track will keep you refreshed enough to forget any stress you might feel.
My main critique of this song, and most of the remaining tracks, isits length. If it’d been just a little bit longer, it could’ve incorporated a bridge to switch things up or add another layer that would’ve made it stand out among the rest.
13BATTITUDE (NAYEON, JEONGYEON, MOMO, MINA)
Track 8 - 2:27
THIS IS FORisan album full of confidence. Many of the unit tracks touch on similar attitudes, with “BATTITUDE” leading the charge. This track’s unapologetic frame of mind risks being seen as corny by many artists, but feels deserved in TWICE’s case.
They’re celebrating their decade-long career this year, so why shouldn’t they get the chance to brag about their success and the carefree attitude they adopt when they don’t feel like giving in to their haters and the negative press every celebrity receives?
12G.O.A.T (MINA, DAHYUN, CHAEYOUNG)
Track 11 - 2:25
Like “BATTITUDE,” this unit track also focuses on the group’s confidence. This time, they claim their place as the “G.O.A.T.” of K-Pop. As their reign continues, this anthem serves as a reminder to everyone who doubted their rise to fame. TWICE is one of the biggest girl groups in the world, and they waste no time letting everyone know why.
11DAT AHH DAT OOH (SANA, JIHYO, DAHYUN, CHAEYOUNG, TZUYU)
Track 9 - 2:28
By the time listeners make it through these three unit tracks, they start to blend together a bit. With such similar themes of confidence, I can’t help but feel like elements from each of them could’ve been blended into one complete song featuring the full group.
This unit has a great balance of vocalists and rappers that almost makes it feel like a regular group song.
Of the three, “DAT AHH DAT OOH"feels the most unique with its 1990s/2000s “Jenny from the Block” sound to it. This unit has a great balance of vocalists and rappers that almost makes it feel like a regular group song, making it one of the standout units for me.
10FOUR
Track 1 - 1:46
As the introductory track, “FOUR” doesn’t have any real lyrical or musical structure, but it does its job perfectly. It eases listeners into the album’s sonic landscape without dropping them directly on their faces.
The more I listen to it, the moreI can picture “FOUR” as an opening track for their upcoming world tour, which just makes it stand out more, even among some of the more straightforward tracks on the album.
9RIGHT HAND GIRL
Track 5 - 2:31
When going through a breakup, leaning on your best friends is typically the perfect salve. If they’re good enough friends to know about your struggles and any issues you’ve had during a relationship, odds are they’ll be the first ones on the way before your tears even start to fall.
THIS IS FORis an album about confidence, butit’s also an album about women standing togetherwith one another no matter what. Why waste your time on a boy who makes you cry when you could ditch him to hang out with your girls?
8HI HELLO
Track 7 - 2:07
The development ofa new crush is enough to make anyone feel like they’re going crazy. A simple greeting makes butterflies form in your stomach and a warm blush rise on your cheeks.
“HI HELLO” speaks to these exact sensations. With a catchy chorus that mimics the repetitive, disbelieving nature of greeting your crush, this song is sure to work its way into your daily rotationafter just one listen.
7MARS
Track 4 - 2:21
When things aren’t going the way you’d hoped, sometimes you feel your only option is to run away with the person you trust the most. “MARS” is a bouncy track that pondersquestions about belonging and what it takes to feel truly alivein this world.
It falls just shy of being a perfect song.
Jihyo’s vocals in the chorus gave me full-body chills, and that’s just one of the most memorable parts of this song. Unfortunately, it falls just shy of being a perfect song, since I believe it could’ve had a great bridge just before that final chorus.
6TALK (NAYEON, JIHYO)
Track 12 - 2:48
Miscommunication is one of my least favorite fictional tropes. Luckily, Nayeon and Jihyo, TWICE’s main vocalists, are here to put an end to that. Rather than pushing things aside and hiding their true emotions, they encourage their partner to talk to them.
The R&B pop sound of “TALK” suits both of their voices so well, especially their surprisingly smooth rap abilities in the verses. It’s a song that speaks to the women TWICE have grown into and the effortlessness they continue to deliver in their music.
5HEARTBREAK AVENUE
Track 14 - 3:16
In a sadder version of Ariana Grande’s “Honeymoon Avenue,” TWICE speaks to the exhaustion that comes with falling in love over and over again, only to end up heartbroken every time. As the final track,it ends the album on a melancholic notethat also comes with a necessary dose of acceptance and realization.
Sometimes you can try time and time again to get over someone and how they hurt you just to have your mind replaying the same memories in a loop. Other times, it’s worth it to accept that chapter’s ending and move on for the better.
