The Pioneer Program is an appropriate title for such a thing, becauseJourney to the Savage Planetis about players being launched into space towards a mysterious and unknown planet. Players will be provided little to no equipment beyond what’s necessary for their immediate survival, if that, and must determine if the planet is fit for human habitation. Though it seems the bigger test will be to see if the player can survive at all in general.

The short trailer shown duringThe Game Awards 2018pre-show doesn’t spoil too much aboutJourney to the Savage Planet. It begins in an empty spaceship and floats out to a lively, wild planet. The astronaut that’s led us here is already dead, a mysterious alien lies nearby. As the camera pans upward, the viewer is left to wonder just what awaits them among the odd flora and fauna within hands reach – and beyond.

What’s particularly exciting aboutJourney to the Savage Planetis the team behind it. Typhoon Studios is relatively young, made from three friends who left Ubisoft for it. Alex Hutchinson will be the most familiar to the gaming audience as the director ofFar Cry 4andAssassin’s Creed 3, but he’s joined by Reid Schneider and Yassine Riahi, executive director and technical director ofFar Cry 4respectively. The two also worked on the Batman Arkham series together, as well as Army of Two.

The three together have the experience to not only put together an outstanding game, but also to form the team necessary in Montreal, Quebec to make an outstanding game.Journey to the Savage Planetappears to be that game, but Typhoon is only just getting started showing it to us.
