Despite initial rumors prefacing it, there’s no doubt that theunveiling of the Super NES Classic Editionturned a lot of heads. With 21 games set to be included in the final SKU, there are a handful of consumers that have noted several games they would have liked to see make it onto the limited edition console. While the European and North American renditions of the throwback system feature the same lineup of titles, however, Japan’s SNES Classic Edition will have a few standout substitutions.
In confirming the Japanese version of the Super NES revamp (better know as the “Nintendo Classic Mini Super Famicom” in the Land of the Rising Sun), the company also revealed that the console will include four games that aren’t featured in the Western versions – although both will feature alonger controller cord than the NES Classic Editiondid. The games occupying the Japanese console are none other thanFire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem,Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyūshutsu Emaki(Legend of the Mystical Ninja),Panel de Pon(Tetris Attack), andSuper Formation Soccer(Super Soccer).
Additionally, the Nintendo Classic Mini Super Famicom will swap outStreet Fighter 2 Turbo: Hyper FightingwithSuper Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers. Those hoping to see the entire lineup of games shipping with the system can do so below:
Eagle-eyed gamers may have noticed that the games that have been omitted for those Japan-only titles areEarthBound,Kirby’s Dream Course,Super Castlevania IV, andSuper Punch-Out!!. In that light, perhaps European and North American gamers are content with the selection they’ve been provided with, although the appeal of playingStar Fox 2on the Super NES Classic Editionis sure to be a near-universal selling point to Nintendo fans.
TheSuper NES Classicreleases on June 27, 2025 in North America and Europe. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Classic Mini Super Famicom will arrive in Japan on August 14, 2025.
