Summary
James Gunn’s upcomingDC Universe(DCU) reboot has confused fans, and he has taken to social media to clear it all up.
Since Gunn first announced that he was rebooting theDC Universe, he has made various statements that have confused about which films and which characters are canon to the DCU. Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first DC character but also stated that the DCU starts withSuperman: Legacy. Additionally, he has said that certain actors would reprise their roles from the DCEU. This has caused more confusion, including from DCEU actors such asWonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, about whether they will be in the DCU.

Gunn made a few posts on his threads account to clear up this confusion. A fan asked him, “You said ‘DC studios movies (and canon) start withSuperman: Legacy.’… Are the returning actors playing new versions of the same characters?” Gunn responded, saying, “Nothing is canon untilCreature Commandosnext year - a sort of aperitif to the DCU - & then a deeper dive into the universe withSuperman: Legacyafter that.” Gunn stated that it’s understandable to feel confused about the DCU, as nothing has been revealed yet.
Another user asked Gunn to clarifyBlue Beetle’s role in the DCU, saying, “In the past, you had said it was included in the new DCU, but some statements are conflicting. Will it have any relation to future projects (i.e.: the Booster Gold show… wink?)” Gunn responded with a list of actors who will reprise their roles in the DCU, saying, “Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker.” Gunn did not mention any other actors rumored to return, such as Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
Another user asked why fans should “invest time and effort in yet another shared universe.” Gunn gave some advice that describesproblems with Marvel’s current state. “Every story should be enjoyed and worth partaking in, in and of itself, without its attachment to an outside world. If it feels like homework, screw it. ‘Shared universes’ should add fun to the individual stories, not the other way around.”
Creature Commandoswill be the start of the DCU instead ofSuperman: Legacy. Some actors will play the same characters, similar to how J.K. Simmons plays J. Jonah Jameson in different Marvel movie franchises. Hopefully, Gunn’s latest updates provided the clarity fans want.
