Desmond Hume Has One Of The Best Arcs In Lost
Henry Ian Cusick plays Desmond Hume inLost, one of the more tragic characters in a series filled with tragic characters. Desmond’s boat crashed on the island three years before Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 crash-landed. Desmond spent his time in the hatch discovered at the end of season 1, pressing the button every 108 minutes. His time alone has driven him to the brink of insanity, but after the survivors of Flight 815 bring him out of the hatch, he regains his composure and senses and becomes determined to find a way off the island.
Desmond is a likeable and sympathetic character, and even though he appears at odds with the survivors when he’s first introduced, Cusick still manages to make him a character you want to see survive. He also has one of the best romantic arcs of the season, with his relationship with Penny Widmore (Sonya Walger) making up some of the best flashback sequences of season 2. Desmond’s arc is one of the best in the series, and Cusick’s honest portrait of a sad, desperate man makes you root for the character.

The survivors of the apocalypse live aboard the space-faring habitat,Arc, and when it’s determined that Earth is once again habitable, 100 juvenile delinquents are sent down as a vanguard.
On Earth, these colonists discover that pockets of humanity survived the nuclear devastation and now fight one another and rule their fiefdoms. This apocalyptic TV series stands out from similar stories because of how well it illustrates each side of the conflict.Just about everyone inThe 100has a good reason for how they act, and watching this gray morality at play is engrossing.The 100takes a bit to get up and running, but after season 1, the series is fast, sharply written, and filled with intriguing mysteries.

Henry Ian Cusick’s Marcus Kane is also a reason forThe 100’s critical success. Marcus Kane is one of the Councillors on theArk. At one time, Kane followed the usual, totalitarian protocols of theArk, but once he learned that the Earth may be habitable, he began to regret the steps he took when he thought there was no other choice. When he comes to Earth,Kane does everything he can to achieve non-violent and peaceful resolutions to problems, and manages to earn respect and loyalty from those who once hated him.
It’s a role filled with regrets and insecurities, and Cusick manages to showcase all these emotions, while still bringing enough gravity to the part that you believe people will still follow him despite his mistakes. He goes from being a commander in theArkto being a true leader on Earth, giving the youth a chance to make decisions for themselves and only offering a gentle hand when needed. It’s a fantastic performance by Henry Ian Cusick, and an excellent follow-up to his performance inLost.
