I completely forgot that thisSeveranceactor was once a regular in Netflix’sYouuntil his cameo appearance in season 5. Joe Goldberg’s story came to a close with this final installment ofYou, which made these episodes the perfect opportunity for previous cast members to return. Most of these were minor characters from Joe’s past, but this didn’t make them any less of a delight to see on screen. This was especially true for one character fromYouseason 1, whose actor has since become far more famous as a member ofSeverance’s primary cast.

This resulted in a variety of characters coming out of the woodwork and posting their own experiences with the violent killer inepisode 7, “#JoeGoldberg.“We saw cameos from many ofYou’s four previous seasons, including Paco from season 1, Sherry and Cary Conrad from season 2, and more. As I watched these characters call Joe out one at a time in thisYouepisode,I was shocked to see a face I had completely forgotten had ever been a part of the series.

One of the characters who posted a TikTok about Joe inYouseason 5 was Ethan Russell, an old employee at Mooney’s Bookstore from season 1. Although Ethan was a minor character overall,he appeared in each of the 10 episodes fromYou’s debut installment. I vaguely remembered the character when he appeared in season 5, but I was shocked to see that he was played bySeverance’s Zach Cherry.
It’s a surprising reminder of where Cherry started and how far he has come.
Cherry plays Dylan inSeverance, a role that significantly accelerated his career when the first season premiered in 2022.Youseason 1 was released on Netflix in 2018, and while Cherry wasn’t new to his acting career, he had, for the most part, been limited to similarly minor roles. Now, seven years later,Severanceis among the biggest hit TV shows of the 2020s, and Cherry is a primary cast member. Cherry was a relatively unknown name back when he played Ethan inYouseason 1, and the character himself never got any significant follow-up after that first installment.We never found out what happened to Ethan after Joe left New Yorkat the start ofYouseason 2, and it wasn’t particularly important. However, now that Cherry is significantly more famous,Youseason 5 returning to his season 1 character is a significant treat.
Cherry’s Ethan didn’t directly speak outagainstJoe like many of the other returning characters inYouseason 5 did. He is a rather sweet and gentle character, which means Joe never felt threatened enough by Ethan to lock him in his cage. Cherry’s character stated that he had never had a problem with Joe, but conceded that he prefers to listen to and believe victims. It wasn’t entirely incriminating, but it made Joe angry nonetheless. Ultimately,the moment served as a fun callback toYou’s earlier years, as well as a reminder of how farSeverance’s Zach Cherry’s career has come.
