Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Pitt season 1, episode 15.Jake Malloy (Taj Speights) and Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) had a close relationship inThe Pittseason 1, but it wasn’t very well-defined how they were related to each other. Jake and Robby clearly had a close relationship. Robby, after all, was going to go to PittFest with Jake until he decided to invite his girlfriend instead, and they also had weekly plans to play basketball together. However, thanks to the nature ofThe Pitt’s very realistic format, there wasn’t a good opportunity for the medical drama to clearly lay out how exactly Robby and Jake know each other, or how they’re related.

Many of the hidden connections between the cast members ofThe Pittwere slowly revealed over the course of the season. For example,Robby and Dr. Collins' (Tracey Ifeachor) relationshipwas hinted at a few times, and there were clearly some strong friendships between characters like Perlah (Amielynn Abellera) and Princess (Kristin Villanueva). Robby and Jake’s relationship, however, wasn’t very clear, andThe Pitt’s hints about how they met got lost in the chaos of the PittFest shooting. The Pittdid, however, start to explain how Jake and Robby are related, and it explains a lot about Jake’s outburst at Robby at the end of the season.

Janey Malloy (Sarah Jane Morris) in The Pitt season 1, episode 14

Dr. Robby Was Previously In A Long-Term Relationship With Jake’s Mother

Technically, Jake and Robby aren’t related at all inThe Pitt. At some point beforeThe Pittstarted, Robby dated Jake’s mother, Janey (Sarah Jane Morris), though their relationship ended before they were ever married. Evidently, while Janey and Robby were dating,Robby and Jake developed a close personal relationship that they maintained long after Robby and Janey broke up. Essentially, Jake is just Robby’s friend and is like an unofficial ex-stepson, though they’re not related through blood or law. Though their friendship outlasted Robby and Janey’s romantic relationship, it had its biggest challenge yet at theend ofThe Pittseason 1.

Will Jake Forgive Robby In The Pitt Season 2 After Leah’s Death?

Most Of Jake’s Anger At Robby Probably Came From His Grief At Such A Recent Tragedy

After Leah (Sloan Mannino), Jake’s girlfriend, died during the PittFest shooting, Jake’s relationship with Robby started to fray. Jake blamed Robby for not being able to save Leah, and he even went as far as to say that Robby wasn’t his father and swore at him in the middle of the hospital. Luckily, there’s still a chance that Jake and Robby can repair their relationshipinThe Pittseason 2. Jake said some hurtful things, but he likely didn’t mean them. He was reeling from Leah’s death, which occurred just a few hours earlier, and in his grief, Jake lashed out at Robby.

Robby is a very emotionally intelligent man, and he likely realizes that Jake was speaking from a place of extreme pain and grief. He knows that Jake wasn’t really trying to hurt him or push him away, and Jake will eventually realize that Robby isn’t really to blame for Leah’s death, once he starts to process the tragedy. The Pittseason 2 also takes place eight months later, which should give Jake enough time to begin to recover from Leah’s death. With any luck,The Pittseason 2 will include more of the friendship between Jake and Robby.
