Bosch: Legacystar Titus Welliver has discussed how the show’s ending will set up the upcoming Renée Ballard spinoff series.Legacyitself functions as a spinoff to the successful Prime Video seriesBosch, adapted from the novel series by Michael Connolly. Welliver has played the titular detective since the show’s premiere in 2017 and looks set to reprise his role in the secondspinoff seriesBallard, which could be set for a summer 2025 release. Following the unexpected cancellation ofBosch: Legacy, the franchise looks set to continue with the upcoming show.
In a recent interview withScreenRant’sGrant Hermanns, Welliver revealed how the show’s end will set up Renée as the lead for her own show. He discussed the complicated dynamic between Bosch and Ballard and her character’s place in the show, praising upcoming leading star Maggie Q. Welliver revealed that thecharacters mistrust one another at first, but recognize the need to put their differences aside, and work together to solve cold cases. Check out his full comments below:
Well, they cross paths. Ballard comes into play, she is working a cold case, and this is a cold case that Harry — if you remember throughout the years, Harry had pictures of three different young women on his desk. These are cold cases, these are unsolved, so Ballard is working a case that’s connected to that. And that’s how they come together, and there’s a lot of mistrust and, of course, and trepidation on both sides. But they ultimately have to set aside their differences, because they have the same purpose.
They are not dissimilar, and I think, in the process, he recognizes a kindred spirit in her to a certain degree, in her work ethic and her relentless nature. She also recognizes that in Bosch, but it’s not a love fest. They kind of have to set aside their differences in order to do this. Maggie Q is fantastic as the character, and anyone who’s read the books, we all form our certain level of prejudice.
We see and hear what we think the character will be, how it would be realized from the books. I can tell you with 100% confidence that the audience is going to be extremely pleased with her interpretation of Ballard. She nails it. Nails it completely. I think her show is going to be a great continuation of the Bosch canon.
What This Means For Bosch: Legacy Season 3
The Finale Could Serve As A Passing Of The Torch To Ballard
Bosch: Legacyending after season 3 is less than ideal for developing Ballard as a character, but it means thatthe finale will serve as a defacto backdoor pilot to give the character her own series. Welliver’s comments suggest thatBallardwill mark a strong continuation of theBoschcanon, and will look to expand on the franchise’s universe. TheBallardtrailer shows Bosch making an appearance, so the character may appear in a few early episodes to help establish the new spinoff, and provide an anchor that links the two shows together.
It is interesting to note that things are more combative than Welliver first teased the Bosch & Ballard relationship dynamic to be. The two will have to reluctantly work together, developing a grudging respect over time.Bosch: Legacydid a great job of continuing the world established in the original series, while also taking the narrative to new and unexpected places.Ballardas a show will seek to achieve a similar goal, establishing itself as a key part of theBoschuniverse, while also expanding on what has come before.
Our Take On Ballard & Its Place In The Bosch Universe
The Series Could Be An Excitingly Fresh Take On The Franchise
BoschandBosch: Legacyare shows that have been full of strong and interesting female characters, andBallardtakes this to the next level. Q’s range and presence as an actor will serve a key role in helping to develop Ballard as a leading character whose story is compelling enough toBoschfans.
Ballard’s role in theBosch: Legacyfinale is yet to be fully confirmed, but there is a good bet the episode will see her investigating one of Bosch’s cold cases, bringing them into conflict. This would also allow the case to spill over intoBallard, and have more pairings between the two detectives.
