The Tenakth Tribe Explained
In theHorizonfranchise, players will not find the glass cities and skyscraper mazes of the modern world. Instead, players are plunged into a dystopian future where deadly robots known as machines roam the land, and humans have had to start the civilization process from scratch. Various tribes have formed, including theNora tribe that Aloy is a part of. One of the tribes that players encounter is the Tenakth, and they are among the fiercest warriors encountered.
The Tenakth are found in the Forbidden West, and they have a lengthy, complicated history. Most of the tribes encountered stem from ELEUTHIA-9, aProject Zero Dawncryostorage facility meant to resurrect humans. The Tenakth traveled away from the Sacred Lands, eventually finding Memorial Grove, which contains several holograms depicting an Old World USA military team known as JTF-10. The Tenakth are starstruck by JTF-10, and they deify the team, referring to them as the Ten.
The tribe is divided into three factions, namely the Desert Clan, the Sky Clan, and the Lowland Clan. They are often in conflict with each other, as they all vie for control of Memorial Grove, which is a sacred location to them. Much of Tenakth culture stems from the JTF-10 holograms and their interpretations of the Old Ones. They are all trained as warriors from birth, and they follow strict codes of loyalty and honor. The Tenakth generally view disability as a weakness and something to be ashamed of. Tenakth who are injured in battle are put to death by fighting against machines. This view ischallenged by Kotallo, a fierce warrior who reveals himself to be quite capable of holding his own despite losing his left arm.
The Tenakth and the Other Tribes of Horizon
Other tribes generally view the Tenakths as violent and brutish, and it is not an entirely unearned reputation. The Tenakths have warred with a few of their neighboring tribes, including the Carja, which proves to be a big mistake. Their attempted attack on the Sundom is thwarted by the massiveCarja tribe. When they work together, the Tenakths are capable of holding their own against the Carja tribe. This is seen during the Carja’s terrible Red Raids. They occur during a time when the Tenakth clans have newfound unity thanks to the leadership of Hekarro. Consequently, by working together, the Tenakth defend themselves well and hold off the Carja invasion. Hekarro values peace and harmony, and he attempts to make peace with the Carja tribe. His plans are disrupted by Regalla who wants no peace with the Carja. Regalla rallies a crowd of Tenakth rebels behind her as she attempts to overthrow Hekarro, but Hekarro is able to defeat them with some help from Aloy.

The Tenakth have a good relationship with theUtaru tribe. In the past, the Tenakth would attack and pillage the pacifist Utaru. However, they eventually established a relationship whereby the Utaru would share some of their resources with the Tenakth. In exchange, the Tenakth provided the Utaru with warriors so that they could learn how to fight. By the time Aloy arrives in the Forbidden West, relations between the Utaru and the Tenakth are still quite good.
The Tenakth and Nemesis
InHorizon Forbidden West, players learn that Nemesis is on the way, and its only goal is to destroy humanity. Nemesis is a malevolent AI entity created by the Far Zenith, and it is responsible for the extinction signal that set off the events ofHorizon Zero Dawn. It has not yet been revealed what form Nemesis will take, or how it plans on enacting its dastardly plans. However, it appears that it will be able to control Earth technology, which means the machines may become part of its arsenal. If Aloy has hope of defeating this foe, she will need an army on her side, and the Tenakth are the ideal choice.
The tenacity and bravery of the Tenakth warriors make them an invaluable asset forAloy in her battle against Nemesis. If the Tenakth can pass on their skills to others, as they have done with the Utaru, they can also ensure that any other tribes Aloy teams up with are also as capable as possible. The Tenakth’s relationship with the Carja could also come in handy. With these two powerful tribes working side-by-side, there is not much that can withstand their strength.
The Tenakth warriors are a key piece of the puzzle, but the tribe will certainly not be the only thing Aloy relies on for her upcoming battle. She will also need her friends, including folks like Erend, Zo, andTalanah the Carja Hunters Lodge leader, and she will also need help from other tribes including the Oseram and the Banuk. It certainly seems like the cards are stacked against humanity, but Aloy has never been one to lose hope even when the situation seems dire.
