HBO’s casting for theHarry PotterTV show hints that one of the movies' most failed characters will finally be done justice. Though we are still a long way from the expected 2027 premiere for theHarry Potterremake’s first season, news has been pouring in regarding casting. We now officially have our new Golden Trio, as well as a significant handful of adult characters like Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Rubeus Hagrid, and more. Now, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced another batch of actors who will be taking part in theHarry PotterTV show.
Several more adultcharacters have been cast for theHarry Potterremake. Molly Weasley will be played by Katherine Parkinson (IT Crowd,) Lucius Malfoy will be played by Johnny Flynn (The Outfit,) Bertie Carvel (Dalgliesh) will play Cornelius Fidge, and Petunia and Vernon Dursley will be played by Bel Powley (A Small Light) and Daniel Rigby (Flowers), respectively. A couple of Hogwarts students have been cast as well, including Draco Malfoy (Lox Pratt), Parvati Patil (Alessia Leoni), and, interestingly,Lavender Brown, who will be played by Sienna Moosah in theHarry Potterremake.
Harry Potter’s TV Show Is Featuring Lavender Brown Much Earlier Than In The Movies
Lavender’s Casting Has Been Announced For Season 1
It’s intriguing that HBO has announced the casting for characters like Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown this early in the game.TheHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stonemovie paid no attention to these individuals, and although they were technically cast, they had no lines, and the young actors weren’t widely credited. In the case of Lavender, it wasn’t untilHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Princethat any real focus was placed on her character. By this point, she had been recast twice, and from movie audiences' perspectives, Lavender had come out of nowhere.
The fact that HBO has announced that Sienna Moosah will be playingLavender in theHarry PotterTV remakesuggests that this character will be more heavily featured in season 1than her movie counterpart was inSorcerer’s Stone. This is excellent news, since Lavender should be in each and every one of Harry’s classes during his first year. Though the Boy Who Lived didn’t much notice her, it’s important for the continuity ofHarry Potterthat this character be present from beginning to end. What’s more, by featuring Lavender so early, HBO’s remake can begin to repair the injustice done to her movie character.
Lavender Brown Was Failed By Harry Potter’s Movies
She Really Came Out Of Nowhere In Half-Blood Prince
In theHarry Pottermovies, Lavender Brown wasn’t really featured untilHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Princewhen she started dating Ron. Even then, the films didn’t do this character any favors. She came across as somewhat unhinged, andher feelings for Ron served as comic relief more than anything. While Lavender Brown was only mentioned a handful of times betweenSorcerer’s StoneandChamber of Secrets, she became a much more prominent figure in Harry’s lessons beginning inHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
In the books, Lavender and her best friend Parvati became great admirers of Professor Trelawney when Harry’s year began taking Divination inPrisoner of Azkaban. Their roles were still largely comical, butthey were solidified as fully fledged characters rather than just background noise. InGoblet of Fire, Lavender became the class gossip, and her character was used to emphasize the surprise that Hermione was dating Viktor Krum. By the time Ron started dating Lavender inHalf-Blood Prince, we knew her rather well. Unfortuantely, theHarry Pottermovies missed all of this.
Lavender Brown’s Earlier Role In Harry Potter’s Series Will Make Her Half-Blood Prince Story Better
This Character Can Have A More Complete Arc
Since Lavernder Brown has been officially cast, we can likely expect this character to be featured even more inHarry Potterseason 1than she was in theSorcerer’s Stonebook. Her personality can be better established, which means she should have a character arc that begins from the very start of the series and carries through to the end.Lavender’s fascination with Professor Trelawney and her role as Hogwarts' gossip inGoblet of Firecan feel like organic transition points. What’s more, this would allow herHalf-Blood Princestory to feel far more natural.
When the relationship crashes and burns, we may have a chance to see Lavender grow as a character.
If Lavender is a more rounded character by theHarry Potterremake’s fifth season, then her story while dating Ron can be far more interesting. We will know that this pairing is a bad fit, since Ron obviously has feelings for Hermione. However, we can empathise with Lavender more, knowing that Ron is essentially using her to make Hermione jealous. The story itself could fall easily within Lavender’s arc, since her “love” for Ron would be similar to her admiration for Professor Trelawney. Then, when the relationship crashes and burns, we may have a chance to see Lavender grow as a character.
Lavender ends up being one of Hogwarts' students who stay behind to fight Voldemort and his Death Eaters inHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Hermione even saved Lavender’s life during the battle when she was attacked by Fenrir Greyback. In theHarry Pottermovies, Lavender’s character appears to be dead after Greyback’s attack—just another way that the films failed her character.
Harry Potter’s TV Format Allows For More Focus On Supporting Hogwarts Students Than In The Movies
We Can Get To Know More Of Harry’s Close Classmates
Getting to know Moosah’s versions of Lavender in theHarry Potterremake would be a treat, especially given how neglected this character was in Warner Bros. ' original movies. Of course, pulling this off would require a bit more time dedicated to supporting Hogwarts students than the films could allow. This is precisely where HBO’sHarry Potterremake can shine. With full seasons dedicated to each of theHarry Potterbooks, the TV show could feature entire episodes that revolve around supporting characters and their previously unknown backgrounds.
The same would be true for other characters. Dean Thomas, for example, has an intriguing family history that author J.K. Rowling never had time to include in the Harry Potter books.
If theHarry Potterremake has a Lavender-centered episode, then we would have all the more reason to care what happens to her by the end of the series when she joins in the Battle of Hogwarts. The same would be true for other characters.Dean Thomas, for example, has an intriguing family historythat author J.K. Rowling never had time to include in theHarry Potterbooks. The TV show can finally bring these and other stories to the forefront. As we eagerly await more exciting casting announcements, we can continue to theorize who will be more heavily featured from start to finish.
