Ghibli’s Producer Proposes a Challenging Adaptation for the Studio’s Next Film

Ghibli’s Next Film May Be Its Most Depressing Yet

According toEiga, at a Studio Ghibli and Uniqlo collaboration event held at Le Grand Rex in Paris on June 15, 2025, Toshio Suzuki and Michael Dudok de Wit,Ghibli’s producer, expressed interest in making another film. Suzuki proposed the new movie’s idea to Dudok de Wit, who is the director of Ghibli’s co-produced film,The Red Turtle.

“I’m currently interested in Edgar Allan Poe’s novel The Raven. Wouldn’t it be interesting to turn it into an animated film?” –Toshio Suzuki.

Dudok de Wit positively received Suzuki’s comment, and the director invited him to discuss it in more detail later. The Ravenby Edgar Allan Poe is a short poem about a man grieving his lover, Leonora, who is visited by a mysterious talking raven, and considering the nature of the story, it could beGhibli’s most challenging and nostalgic film.

The Ravenexplores how sadness and depression can consume someone completely, making it a difficult story to bring into Ghibli’s movie style. However, if Suzuki’s plan to animateThe Ravencomes to fruition, it wouldn’t be the first time Poe’s poem gets reimagined, as it was loosely adapted in a 1963 Roger Corman film and in James McTeigue’s 2012 thriller.
