HBO has provided a first look at theHarry PotterTV show’s new Rubeus Hagrid. This comes just after an image of Dominic McLaughlin fully costumed as Harry Potter was unveiled as the official announcement that production for the series is underway. Now, Hagrid—the groundskeeper for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry—is the next character in line.

Actor Nick Frost will play the part of Hagrid in the upcomingHarry PotterTV show, anda new image from HBO reveals how this half-giant character will look on screen. Frost’s costume features the bushy hair and beard described in theHarry Potterbooks, along with a greenish coat, a button-up shirt, and trousers. What Nick Frost’s Hagrid Means For HBO’s Harry Potter TV Show

HBO Is Making Some Subtle & Tasteful Adjustments

HBO recently provided afirst look at McLaughlin as Harry Potter, revealing that this new version of the titular character will bear a resemblance to Daniel Radcliffe’s portrayal. Now, Frost’s Hagrid demonstrates howHBO’sHarry PotterTV remakewill make subtle shifts to the movie characters' appearances. This character is unmistakable, but there are some significant differences from Coltrane’s version.

Hagrid’s bushy hair and beard largely obscured Coltrane’s face. However,Frost’s costume keeps the actor’s face slightly more visible and recognizable. Additionally, theHarry Pottermovies saw Hagrid frequently wear a moleskine coat, which was how the character was garbed in J.K. Rowling’s novels. The green coat worn by Frost is entirely unique by comparison.

It’s evident from HBO’s first-look image of Frost’s Hagrid that the costume department for theHarry PotterTV show is taking some subtle creative liberties. However, in this case, these changes are tastefully done. Frost’s appearance doesn’t contradict the books, but insteadoffers a fresh perspective on a character with whom audiences are already familiar.

Our Take On Nick Frost’s Rubeus Hagrid

This New Hagrid Feels More Like An Homage Than A Replacement

At first glance, it’s a bit unsettling to see a new actor in the role of Rubeus Hagrid. Coltrane has long been an image of comfort forHarry Potterfans, and it isn’t easy to separate the groundskeeper from the actor who first played him. However, given some time to adjust,it continues to be evident that HBO made a great choice in casting Frost for theHarry PotterTV show.

I feel it’s significant that HBO made more adjustments to Hagrid’s look than McLaughlin’s Harry. Frost’s version of the character doesn’t replace Coltrane’s, but adds something new instead. WhenHarry Potterseason 1 premieres on HBO Max in 2027, it shouldn’t take us long to embrace Frost’s portrayal of the character we know and love.
