Fortnite Reloadcelebrates the arrival of its newest map, Slurp Rush, with a commercial meant to evoke nostalgia for the 90s. The Reload version of the popular Battle Royale game features Sqads-only gameplay in massive 40-player showdowns. Introduced lass then a year ago,Fortnite Reloadgives players a new way to play, and the newest map is a fun new addition to the title.
The new Slurp Rush map debuted this week, andFortniteis celebrating like it’s 1999 with thedelightfully nostalgic ad “Feel the Rush,” featuring comedians Eric André and Kyle Mooney.Fortnitemight bemost popular with the younger crowd, but this commercial is firmly aimed at an older audience. The trailer is a perfectly crafted homage to commercials from the 90s and 2000s, down to the lower “film-video” quality and the 4:3 aspect ratio of old TV screens.
André And Mooney Are Perfectly Cast As 90s Teens
The ad is perfectly cast, with André and Mooney nailing the role of the typical 90s “teenagers” in an absurd parody of old commercials. The “Feel the Rush” ad starts with a90s mom bringing home groceries and her teenage sons, Eric André and Kyle Mooney, being disappointed to find that they’re just “regular groceries.”
Luckily, the mom surprises the two “youngsters” by pulling out two bottles of Slurp Juice, the iconic healing item fromFortnite.Downing the Slurp Juicetransforms the two charactersand takes them in a flash from the drab 90s kitchen and down the neighborhood on an exciting Slurp-fueled trip.
As they zoom past various neighbors and houses in a blue blur, they switch out the boring everyday people and items into “radical” new outfits and colors, before spelling out “Slurp” on the lawn of an unsuspecting neighbor. The ad ends with André and Mooney getting propelled into the air by a geyser of Slurp Juice. Abrief look at the newFortnitemapappears in the background asFortnitecharacters are seen chugging the juice in the foreground.
Commercials Like This Show The Best Side Of Fortnite
Thisfantastic callback to the 90sis a surefire way to win potential older fans over, expertly recreating the typical sugary drink ads of the era, which used similar effects to make the products seem awesome and exciting to kids. Casting the comedy duo was just the icing on the cake. The two manage to nail the facial expressions in a skit that would be right at home onSNLas it is in thisFortnitetrailer.
This isn’t the first celebrity cameo and media reference that have graced the isles ofFortnite, with many others seemingly aimed at an older audience, too. Among modern pop culture icons like Sabrina Carpenter and (unfortunately)Skibidi Toilet, the hit Battle Royale title has also brought in someclassics like Mariah CareyandCowboy Bebop. AsFortnitecontinues to add new skins and content, its celebrity roster will grow right alongside it.
