With the release ofFar Cry 6, it remains clear that one of the franchise’s greatest strengths is its villain,Anton Castillo (as played by Giancarlo Esposito). Through the players’ adventure in Yara, Anton will be the iron hand behind many of the antagonists players will face, with a few scenes and interactions to really establish his relationship with Dani Rojas.

Far Cry 6players have reported receiving emails from Ubisoft, written as if it were Anton mocking the player, as reported by IGN, Gamesindustry.biz, and more. These emails have included subjects like “You disappoint me” and other lines such as “it was amusing watching you fail,” “surely you can do better than this,” “thank you for giving me free rein of Yara” “I will remove you from history. No one will know your name,” and “I am Yara.”

At first, it seemed these emails were only going toFar Cry 6players who had only spent a couple of hoursin-game, but it’s become more and more clear that even those who are actively playing or have invested a good bit of time into it are receiving them as well. This, in turn, has sparked some debate as to whether something like this is okay or not.

Many find it to be interesting marketing and are amused being beleaguered by theFar Cry 6villainwhen not in the game. Others may have no real problem with this style of marketing, but receiving an email with the subject line “you disappoint me” may be going a step too far.

IGN reached out to Ubisoft for comment on theFar Cry 6email ads, with the company making the following statement regarding them: “The emails sent to Far Cry 6 players are intended to be a fun and clever way to remind folks to come back to Yara and are written as if from El Presidente himself. We’ve heard from the community and we’ve shared their concern with El Presidente. And know thatChorizodoes miss you dearly.”

Far Cry 6is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
