A reboot ofFamily Matterscould be produced if a major stumbling block can be overcome. Even though some of the original show’s stars have passed away, the proposed revival would include members of the original cast.
In 2025,Jaleel White recreated a classicFamily MatterssceneandKellie Shanygne Williams discussed where her character would be today. However, it is one of the other stars of the original version ofFamily Matters, Bryton James, who is working on reviving the show.
In anEntertainment Weeklyinterview, Bryton James made the following remarks about the work he’d put into an animatedFamily Mattersrevival.
“I’ve had an idea to take the show and turn it into an animated series [by] taking the old episodes and modernizing them and kind of starting from scratch for the new generation. I got a production company in line to finance [and want to bring] everybody on board. It’s sitting in Warner Bros.’ hands right now. That plan is still kind of floating around out there, and I’m still trying to pursue it.”
Entertainment Weekly’sreport cited a source at Warner Bros. Animation who told them the company was aware of James' efforts. However, the source toldEWthat at that time, the company hadn’t made any plans to move forward with James' proposedFamily Mattersrevival.
What Bryton James Proposed Family Matters Animated Revival Means For The Show’s Fans
Warner Bros. Animation not yet agreeing to move forward with Bryton James' proposedFamily Mattersrevival is a huge catch and stumbling block. However, there are reasons why James' comments about his proposedFamily Mattersrevival deserve to be taken a little bit more seriously than that.
James isn’t just someFamily Mattersfan who wants to bring the show back. Instead, IMDb credits James with starring in 143 episodes ofFamily Mattersas Richie Crawford. James has also continued to act regularly as an adult, so he would still have contacts in the entertainment industry.
Bryton James toldEWthat otherFamily Mattersstars have agreed to the project, and he claims to have investors lined up. Even if Warner Bros. Animation has no interest in producing the proposed project, they might let the revival move to another company if the money is right.
While it seems unlikely theFamily Mattersrevival will move forward anytime soon, the possibility doesn’t seem like it should be outright dismissed.
Our Take On Whether An Animated Family Matters Revival Is A Good Idea
Anytime a classic show is revived, everyone involved is taking a risk. After all, longtime fans will tend to have high expectations that will be difficult to match. Factoring inFamily Mattersrevival is to be animated, that could really turn fans off.
While looking back atFamily Matters’legacy, however, the idea of producing an animated revival makes a lot of sense. SinceFamily Mattershad storylines like the one involving an evil dummy version of Steve Urkel, the original show was cartoonish in its own way.
Given how over-the-top the original version ofFamily Matterscould be, why not take things up another notch by making the revival animated?
