At E3 this year, among many other things, the location of the latest installment in the award-winningFalloutseries,Fallout 76, was announced by Bethesda. It was announced at the game’s reveal thatFallout 76will take place in West Virginia, and now Bethesda has very recently announced on Twitter that the official name for the game’s map will be Appalachia.

In the tweet below, Bethesda reveals the name of the mountainous area in which the upcoming game will take place, along with a picture of a mysterious weapon, called a Guitar Sword. According to the tweet, the strange-looking Guitar Sword is apparently one of the things that differentiatesFallout 76’s Appalachia fromFallout 3’s Capital Wasteland andFallout 4’s Commonwealth. Bethesda does not give any other details in the tweet, which leaves us wondering in what other ways Appalachia will be different from the previousFalloutmaps.

What we do know is that Appalachia derives its name from the Appalachian Mountains, which in turn is what the state of West Virginia derives its nickname from. The Appalachian Mountain range is known for moonshine, blue ridges, and other natural wonders, and it stretches through multiple states in America. West Virginia happens to be entirely within the Mountain’s ranges though, and this should give an indication of the type of landscape aesthetic that players can expect inFallout 76.

In addition, it has been indicated earlier this year that the size of the map will befour times the size ofFallout 4’s map, which means that it will be extremely large at approximately 350km² in size. Bethesda has also confirmed that theFallout 76map will include a large number of landmarks such as the New River Gorge Bridge and Monongahela National Forest, so fans have a lot to look forward to.

In fact, Bethesda has promised thatFallout 76will besupported “forever,“which is another indication of how seriously the studio is taking this game.

Fallout 76will be released on July 23, 2025 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
