John Krasinski’s 2016 action thriller is climbing the streaming charts as the wait continues for moreJack Ryan. Krasinski may have gotten his start as an actor by playing lovable goofball Jim Halpert on NBC’sThe Office, but he has since branched beyond comedy, asserting himself as an action star.
A major move in this regard was his casting in Prime Video’sTom Clancy’sJack Ryan, a new take on the iconic character previously played by Harrison Ford, Chris Pine, and Ben Affleck.Krasinski starred in the series across four popular seasonsand is now poised to reprise his role for a movie instead of aJack Ryanseason 5.
Outside the spy thriller show,Krasinski has become a notable figure in the horror genre, too, directing and starring inA Quiet Placein 2018, and directing its 2020 sequel. Krasinski is expected to return as director for theannouncedA Quiet Place Part 3.
More recently, Krasinski starred in Guy Ritchie’sFountain of Youth(2025), a film that positioned him as an Indiana Jones-like action hero. Though the film wasn’t particularly well-received,Krasinski has previously confirmed his action hero status with a gritty war thriller, which is now picking up steam on streaming.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi Becomes A Streaming Hit
Nine years after it hit theaters,13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghaziis ascending the charts on one streaming service.Directed by Michael Bay,the war film chronicles real events from 2012 in which a security team defends against an attack on a U.S. compound in Libya.
Krasinski plays Jack Silva in the action-packed film, with James Badge Dale, Pablo Schreiber, and David Denman, among others, rounding out the rest of the cast.13 Hoursreleased to mixed reviewsand was a box office disappointment.
Now,13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghaziis experiencing a resurgence in popularity, asit is currently the ninth most popular movie on MGM+. Though the film may not have made too big a mark in 2016, the Krasinski war movie is evidently finding an audience nearly a decade later.
What This Means For 13 Hours
OnRotten Tomatoes,13 Hourssports a lackluster 51% critics score, with reviews taking issue with Bay’s treatment of violence and his lack of subtlety when it comes to the portrayal of a significant real event. The audience-driven Popcornmeter score, however, is much higher at 83%, indicating more widespread acceptance from general moviegoers.
This more positive response wasn’t enough to save the movie at the box office, asthe film only grossed $69 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $50 million. Considering the film was likely looking at a break-even point of around $125 million, strong streaming performance on MGM+ probably won’t be enough to make up the difference.
The general rule of thumb is that a Hollywood film needs to earn two-and-a-half times its budget to become profitable.
After a movie leaves theaters, its status as a success or a disappointment becomes murky, as revenue numbers generally aren’t made public. It’s hard to say, then, whether the movie’s performance on home-viewing platforms has been enough to turn the tide.
Still, it speaks to Krasinski’s appeal as a leading man that13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghaziis becoming popular on streaming all these years later, and it bodes well for the upcomingJack Ryanfeature film.
