While it was virtually unheard of in the past, recent years have seen cross-play become a common occurrence in the gaming industry. Not only have we seen cross-play between consoles and PC, but we’ve also seen console competitors put aside their differences to allow cross-play, withXbox One and Nintendo Switch supporting the featurefor a number of upcoming releases. While more online-enabled games are supporting cross-play than ever before, the upcomingDragon Ball FighterZwill not be one of them, unfortunately.
This is according toDragon Ball FighterZproducer Tomoko Hiroki. Hiroki was specifically asked if there were any plans to support cross-play between the PC and PS4 versions ofDragon Ball FighterZ, as we’ve seen in other fighting games likeStreet Fighter 5, but his comments indicate that cross-play isn’t in the works for any version of the game.
“We do plan to bring the game to [PC and PS4] and Xbox One, but we aren’t planning on any cross play.”
For anyone hoping to playDragon Ball FighterZwith friends on other platforms, this news is sure to be disappointing. It’s also somewhat surprising, as cross-play has become more popular, and one would have guessed that cross-play between the PC and Xbox One versions would be coming, at the very least.
After all, Microsoft’s push for PC gaming has seen it make an effort to support unity between the platform and Xbox through programs like Xbox Play Anywhere and cross-play. Furthermore,Dragon Ball FighterZmade its debut at E3 2017during Microsoft’s press conference, so it seemed even more likely that the game would support some of Microsoft’s endeavors.
While cross-play isn’t currently planned forDragon Ball FighterZ, plans could change in the future. The game isn’t expected to launch until next year, and if support for cross-play continues to increase in the coming months, Bandai Namco may very well decide it’s worth taking the time to include the feature.
