One might think that 25 years after the release ofDoom, its co-creator would presumably be done with it. That’s not the case, though, asDoomco-creator John Romero has now released a brand new unofficial mod forDoom, offering up 9 brand new blood-soaked levels for players to enjoy.

TheDoommodSigilis John Romero’s latest addition to the classic FPS, after numerous players asked for a full episode following his release of theE1M8B and E1M4B unofficial mapsa few years ago. The nine levels available in this campaign can be played in either single-player or deathmatch modes, and either way, they pose a huge challenge intended for players who’ve playedDoombefore. Players are immediately dropped into the action and must struggle to survive against the hordes of hell, so those who have never tried out the originalDoommight want to complete a vanilla playthrough before trying outSigil.

Sigilalso contains a unique soundtrack provided by metal guitarist Buckethead. According toRomero, Doomguy himself, he personally sought out Buckethead as he felt that his musical style would fit well with the game, especially since the original’s soundtrack was a MIDI take on metal music. While the game is free, players who want to enjoy Buckethead’s soundtrack will need to dish out a little cash, as this variant of the game comes in at a cheekily-priced €6.66.

Doomas a series has come a long way from its early roots, and Romero makes it clear that he’s a big fan of what id Software has done with it, and is eagerly awaitingDoom Eternal. Like other players, the critically-acclaimedDoomof 2016 pleased him greatly.

Players who can’t get enough of gory FPS nostalgia might also be interested in revisitingQuake 2. NVIDIA recently announced that it would be releasing an RTX version of the game that utilizes ray tracing for PC gamers with video cards that are capable of handling it. The result is remarkable and stunning to look at, with vastly improved lighting, shadows, and water detail, all while still retaining the original core gameplay.
