Karen Stanley, a level artist for theTom Clancygame, took plays through the rubber ducks' origin story. Stanley told viewers that many programs in the industry talk to rubber ducks that sit at their work stations, as hashing out the problem out loud helps the programmer figure out how to solve the issue in the software. One programmer forDivision 2took this a step further and added a huge rubber duck into one of the game’s levels to remind himself that he needed to do a specific task in that level. Whatever the task was, the duck remained in the level for quite some time.
During that time, Stanley said that many of the other artists grew attached the the ginormous rubber duck, and as a result, they all began adding subtly adding them to the game in hard to reach places. As time went on, theDivision 2programmers got more into adding these Easter eggs, and they started setting the ducks up in such a way that these rubber bath toys were conveying different stories to those who found them. Many players on platforms likeYouTubefound these ducks intriguing and posted videos displaying them.
