WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 4!
This article contains mentions of sexual assault as discussed inDexter: Resurrection.
One of the new serial killers inDexter: Resurrectionhas a story witha striking resemblance to an important original character, who only made a brief one-season appearance. Whileevery season of the originalDextershowsaw him content with multiple killers as he hunted down those who escaped justice while facing a “big bad” at the end,Dexter: Resurrection’s castups the game as he finds himself in a secret society of serial killers in New York City.
While the majority ofDexter: Resurrection’s new serial killers are heinous, such as Neil Patrick Harris’ Tattoo Collector or Eric Stonestreet’s Rapunzel, one stands out for having target victims that fall more in line withDexter’s own Code. That happens to beKrysten Ritter’s Mia, aka Lady Vengeance, whose choice of victims and budding relationship with Dexter hark back to a major season 5 character.
Mia/Lady Vengeance’s Killer Story Is Very Similar To Dexter Season 5’s Lumen Pierce
Both Are Killers Seeking Justice Against Predators
In her own view of using her dark urges for justice,Mia targets predators inDexter: Resurrection. Mia’s very first victim was her mother’s boyfriend, who had sexually abused her as a teenager before also assaulting her younger sister once she left home. Upon learning that information, Mia killed him, which led to her hunting down and killing other known sexual predators – similar to Dexter targeting known killers.
Mia’s origins in becoming a killer and path of taking justice into her own hands is reminiscent of the story ofJulia Stiles’ Lumen Pierce inDexterseason 5. Lumen was a victim of the Barrel Girl Gang, who was assaulted by the criminals but found by Dexter before they could kill her. Soon after,Lumen and Dexter teamed up to take out each member of the Barrel Girl Gang who had assaulted her and previously killed others.
However, while Lumen’s stint as a killer stopped once the entire Barrel Girl Gang was gone,Mia continued to target predators long after killing her mother’s boyfriend. The difference is emphasized by Mia discussing her own dark urges to kill inDexter: Resurrectionepisode 4, which had been inside her long before her first murder. Lumen, meanwhile, had no urge to kill outside of revenge against those who attacked her.
With help from Dexter, Lumen killed Alex Tilden and Jordan Chase inDexterseason 5.
The last time Lumen was ever seen in the franchise wasDexter’s season 5 finale, in whichshe announced to Dexter she would be leaving Miami in an effort to embark on a more normal life. Though there’s been no update on the memorableoriginalDextercharactersince her 2010-premiering episodes, it’s presumed that she stayed true to that sentiment.
Dexter & Lumen’s Romance Reveals Why His Relationship With Lady Vengeance Is Doomed
Dexter Doesn’t Have A Good Track Record With Dating Killers
Dexter’s romanceshave never ended well, but his relationships with other killers have been the most complex. Back in season 2, he had a whirlwind romance with Lila, who died after murderingiconicDextercharacter James Doakes. He then formed arelationship with Lumen in season 5 and serial killer Hannah McKayin seasons 7 and 8, who raised Harrison until her death beforeNew Blood.
While the two haven’t acted on their feelings quite yet,Dexter: Resurrectionis making it clear that Dexter and Mia are about to embark on a dangerous romancein the latest sequel series. Considering Mia has a vigilante-like killing focus similar to Dexter himself, their dynamic may become even more similar to Lumen and Dexter’s romance.
Considering Lumen and Dexter’s relationship didn’t work out, history is bound to repeat itself inDexter: Resurrection. Dexter has always worked better as a killer when on his own, and he already has an important personal relationship with another killer to prioritize with his son Harrison.
Mia could embrace Dexter more once discovering his vigilantism, or she could become another victim on his table.
Not to mention, Mia believes that Dexter is actuallyResurrection’s Dark Passenger killer.Once she finds out that he’s actually Dexter Morgan, the Bay Harbor Butcher, there’s no telling how she’ll react. Mia could embrace Dexter more once discovering his vigilantism, or she could become another victim on his table.
Lumen Is Still One Of The Only Living People Who Knows The Truth About Dexter’s Bay Harbor Butcher Past
Lumen & Angela Are Among The Few Left Who Know The Truth
Dexter now has several people alive who know that he’s a killer, but only a few currently know the truth about his real identity and homicidal past. New charactersLeon, Charley, Mia, Gareth, and Al know that he’s a killer, but they think he’s Red/The Dark Passenger. Meanwhile, in New York, Harrison knows the truth about Dexter being a killer while Batista just needs evidence to prove it.

Dexter: Resurrection
Still, there are some other lingering characters fromDexter’s original series that are presumably still alive andknow about Dexter’s Dark Passenger. That includes Lumen Pierce, who haskept the secret of Dexter being the Bay Harbor Butcher since her willing exit in season 5. Additionally,New Blood’s Angela Bishop knows the truth but is keeping it a secret in exchange for Dexter killing her best friend’s murderer.
Despite being absent from the show for the past 15 years,Lumen is still one of the few living people who could expose Dexter Morganas a killer. Doing so would mean incriminating herself, but she still remains a risk due to her ability to potentially reveal his serial killer identity to the world.
Since Lumen is presumably still alive, there’s alwaysbeen a question regarding whether Julia Stiles may one day return to the world ofDexter. If Dexter were to be exposed to the public, Lumen could be roped back into that world if the authorities were to link the two to the Barrel Girl Gang. With Dexter being riskier than ever inDexter: Resurrection, that potential outcome may not be too far off.
