Erik King Is Officially Returning As James Doakes In Dexter: Resurrection

Doakes Will Appear As A Hallucination In Dexter: Resurrection

A report fromDexter Dailyconfirmed thatthe executive producer ofDexter: Resurrection, Clyde Phillips, announced that Erik King would return as James Doakes in the sequel series. Like the Trinity Killer and Miguel Prado, however, Doakes has been dead for years by the timeDexter: Resurrectiontakes place, shortly after theending ofDexter: New Blood.

Phillips also made sure to note that Doakes will appear as a hallucination of Dexter’s, just as Trinity and Prado will. While it may just be Dexter’s memory of Doakes, the belovedDextercharacter is returning.

Doakes' Hallucination Return Hints Dexter Will Publicly Be Exposed As The Bay Harbor Butcher In Resurrection

Doakes Could Finally Get Peace & Justice If Dexter Takes The Blame As The Bay Harbor Butcher

Clyde Phillips didn’t reveal exactly when Doakes' hallucination would appear to Dexter, but there’s one option that seems likely. In the originalDexter, Dexter framed Doakes as the Bay Harbor Butcher, and the case was closed when Lila (Jaime Murray) killed the detective. However, inNew Blood, Angela (Julia Jones) discovered that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher. With that in mind,it would make a lot of sense for Doakes to reappear to Dexter if the latter was outed as the real Bay Harbor Butcher to the public. Angela and Batista will likely spread the word after Dexter escapes inResurrection, after all.

Having Doakes reappear to Dexter after the truth about the Bay Harbor Butcher comes out would also be incredibly thematically fitting.Framing Doakes and ruining his legacy as a good cop were among the many terrible things Dexter did in the original series, and this is a chance for him to finally reconcile with his past. Doakes could torment Dexter from beyond the grave and essentially personify his guilty conscience and the way the past is catching up to him. It’s also a chance for Doakes (or Dexter’s memory of him) to finally get some peace and justice after having his legacy destroyed for over a decade.

Doakes' Dexter: Resurrection Return Is Also Good News For Original Sin

Doakes Is Becoming A Major Character Again, & A Younger Version Of Him Could Appear In Original Sin

Doakes' return inDexter: Resurrectionisn’t just good for the sequel show, it’s also a good sign forDexter: Original Sin. Thecast ofOriginal Sinincluded a lot of legacy characters fromDexter, but one notably absent character was James Doakes.Bringing Doakes back forResurrectionwill make him an important character again, over a decade after his death, and could open the door forOriginal Sinto introduce its own, younger version of Doakes.Original Sinalready exists as Dexter’s memories that he relives at the start ofResurrection, so it would make sense to have the memory of Doakes crop up in the prequel series.

Original Sinis also in a very good spot to bring Doakes back. Theending ofOriginal Sinseason 1helped establish the series as its own show and get all the pieces of Dexter’s early life into place. Given the popularity of Doakes as a character,it’s also entirely possible that Showtime was waiting to bring him back until Erik King could reprise the role himself, which was always going to have to be inResurrection. The pieces are all in place, andDexter: Original Sinmay finally be able to introduce James Doakes now thatDexter: Resurrectionis doing it.
