Long time fans of the franchise know how flawedDestiny 2’s matchmaking can be at times. For all the trouble it causes, matchmaking errors very rarely lead to memorable moments, but that’s not the case this time around.
Recently, oneDestiny 2player on Reddit reported that they got thrown into a strike while trying to launch to the Tower. What ensued was a 20-man strike experience.

User C_Lav604 says that upon logging in, they immediately set course for the Tower from orbit. It took a while for them to load in, and when they did, the game put them at the bottom of the elevator section of the strike “The Corrupted” from Forsaken.
When none of the nearby players seemed like they were leaving, C_Lav604 decided to carry on and complete the strike with them like normal. After eventually reaching the boss encounter, they looked up to see tens of Guardian nametags way up in the ceiling above them.
The poster notes that the boss took some time to spawn in, possibly due to the unusual circumstances. After she did, they were able to start the fight, teleporting in the players left behind into the encounter arena. There is no video footage of the battle, but it was apparently utter chaos, as one might’ve guessed, and was over in seconds. The strike mission actually concluded properly, giving all theDestiny 2 playerstheir end-of-activity rewards, and returned the massive lobby to orbit as if nothing odd had happened.
It’s interesting that even though the game incorrectly recognized the strike area as the Tower, nothing of note broke within the strike. The enemies spawned, the encounters concluded, players were properly connected and the loot was distributed. All participants were displayed as fireteam members in-game, as if a 20-man fireteam were possible, let alone the fact that this is inside a strike.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, either. Four months ago, another user on Reddit, emperorkrek, was put into thestrike “The Arms Dealer” while trying to load into the Tower. Player “Krek” was also greeted with 10+ players upon joining a strike mission.
The activity was once again able to be completed “like normal,” but since the strike zone wasn’t optimized for 14+ players, the game started to suffer great lag. There were player loading issues as well, but those can happen in the Tower for brief periods regardless.
One of the major takeaways from incidents like these is that areas which are normally restricted to 3 players are indeed capable of accommodating many more. Patrol zones, for example, allow up to 9 players per instance, butthe maximum fireteam size is limited to 3.
Fans have been asking for explorable zones to be more populated, especially in terms of fireteam size. It seems like Bungie does have the tech to pull this off, but no hints have been given regarding the future of patrol zone populations.
Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
