Death Stranding Almost Had A Cameo from A Surprising Game Developer

The upcomingDeath Strandingis shaping up to be one of the biggest video game releases of the year. One thing that has garnered it plenty of attention is its all-star cast, which includes stars likeThe Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus, celebrated actor Mads Mikkelsen, the award-winning Lea Seydoux,horror film director Guillermo del Toro, and more. While these performers have significant roles in the story,Death Strandingalso features a number of smaller appearances from famous people and video game industry figures. As it turns out, it could have had evenmorecameos, though at least one person turned down the opportunity.

God of Wardirector Cory Barlog recently mentioned on Twitter how he isn’t inDeath Stranding, which prompted a response fromGears of Warcreator Cliff “CliffyB” Bleszinski. Apparently,Death Strandinggame director Hideo Kojima reached out to CliffyB while he was in Japan to see if he would be interested in getting scanned into the game. However, CliffyB declined as it was around the time that Boss Key Productions shut down.

WhileDeath Strandingplayers won’t be able to find CliffyB in the game, there will be some other major cameos in the game for them to find. This includes The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley, as well astalk show host Conan O’Brien. It stands to reason that there are other surprisingDeath Strandingcameos that just have yet to be revealed, so fans will have to wait until the game’s launch on November 8 to see more.

Some may be wondering how Kojima was able to squeeze in all these surprise appearances into the world ofDeath Strandingand still have it make sense. Well,Norman Reedus’s character Sam Bridgesactually delivers packages in the game, sometimes to outposts where he has an interaction with a hologram NPC. It’s unclear just how many of these hologram NPCs will be scans of famous people and how many will use lesser-known actors or will be created entirely in-game.

That question, and hopefully many of the other ones surroundingDeath Stranding, will be answered once the game launches on November 8.
